Chez ISS - Cooking on International Space Station with Jessica Meir and Anil On this episode we give you farm to table, simple, and delicious. This Kale and Wasabi Mustard was grown on ISS over one month. We harvested several leaves and put them to the test. It might be the best meal we have cooked so far. Thanks to the NASA veggie team for guiding us through the growth process and providing simple skills that could help provide food for future space travel. Mark Watney would be proud.

I’ll never forget this sight. Tonight I saw my first aurora from space. Luckily, there is a video to help remember and captured it perfectly. The KP index was over 5 tonight because of a solar event and the sky over Australia lit up and the green snaked across the atmosphere. I was filled with awe and gratitude. It’s a beautiful planet we share.

Spacewalk preparation. We went out of the door in the morning for the last space walk (central time), however, the flight controllers at NASA and our crew started getting ready 8 hours before that with a morning routine, preparing the equipment, putting the suits on, and breathing 100% oxygen. Okay, there’s a lot more to it than that, but the video is a good snapshot of the amazing work that NASA engineers do and Jack Hathaway and Jessica Meir

They say when one door closes, another one opens. In this case, we are closing two doors and opening many more. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Crew-12 reuniting with their families. The entire International Space Station crew wishes them a safe journey. Godspeed

This is how we do science on the International Space Station. In this demonstration, we have one person operating the ultrasound and the other person operating the controls. A remote guider and a team of doctors make sure that we’re getting the right images and also analyzing the images immediately in case we need to follow up. Scientists and physicians are concerned that microgravity changes the normal flow of blood and could predispose astronauts to blood clots.

Space stations can do gymnastics! Look out the Dragon window and watch us flip direction. In order to boost station, we had to change the direction it was pointing, so NASA engineers flipped it around, and, here, you can see it flipping back. This movie was made from 5500 still images that were taken last night and stitched together. The images were not changed but I did increase and decrease the frame rate to give you a better sense of the movement and Earth.

Stay Hard! Exercise on station takes focus, determination, and grit. Without exercise you lose 3% of bone mass per month, 10-15 % of muscle mass and body weight, and see over 10% decrease in VO2 max. Navy Captain Jack Hathaway was a friend and, at times, a personal trainer and coach that pushed me to new levels like David Goggins.

The night’s watch: Aurora through the eye of the Dragon. This timelapse had the same setup as the last post from SpaceX Dragon’s starboard window—with one difference—the aurora is absolutely wild and on fire. Each 90 minute cycle at night has looked like this and KP index has been 4-5.
