Spotted ISS pass by last night at L-3. Soyuz gets there in 3 hours and 20 minutes. I wondered how it happens so fast - ISS does a reboost as well so their orbits are perfectly timed to sync up. There is also a slight attitude change of ISS. That reboost happen several days ago to get ready for the 11/27 launch.

Spacewalk preparation. We went out of the door in the morning for the last space walk (central time), however, the flight controllers at NASA and our crew started getting ready 8 hours before that with a morning routine, preparing the equipment, putting the suits on, and breathing 100% oxygen. Okay, there’s a lot more to it than that, but the video is a good snapshot of the amazing work that NASA engineers do and Jack Hathaway and Jessica Meir

I’ll never forget this sight. Tonight I saw my first aurora from space. Luckily, there is a video to help remember and captured it perfectly. The KP index was over 5 tonight because of a solar event and the sky over Australia lit up and the green snaked across the atmosphere. I was filled with awe and gratitude. It’s a beautiful planet we share.

Spent the day inside the Life Sciences Glovebox with Jessica Meir, who is patiently teaching the new guy. She’s running IVGEN Mini, our IV fluid generation experiment, and the idea is simple to say and hard to do: turn the station’s drinking water into sterile, medical-grade IV fluid. Why it matters: IV bags expire in about 16 months, and a Mars mission could run a few years. You also can’t launch the 100+ liters a sick crew member might need. So instead of packing saline, we pack a filter and salt. Station water gets purified to pharmaceutical grade, mixes with premeasured sodium chloride, and comes out the other side as normal saline. As a physician, this one hits close to home. If we can make IV fluid 250 miles up, we can make it in a field hospital, a disaster zone, or anywhere the supply chain doesn’t reach.

Sat in the Barany chair today — one of the things we do before spaceflight. Eyes closed, tilt your head to each side for two seconds, over and over. Some of my crewmates went nearly 20 minutes. I started feeling disoriented and nauseous after about a minute. A humbling reminder of how adaptable (and unpredictable) the vestibular system can be.

Here is a 360 view of the cupola where I got to spend some time with Chris Williams, soaking up his knowledge on cameras, stars, physics, and spacewalks. I was his backup for his launch, and now that I am here, he is passing on the knowledge he gained over 8 months on the International Space Station, including a month as the only US crew member. I’m happy he gets to return but sad to not be able to immediately turn to him for advice on where to find an experiment, or how to organize the work bench with duct tape & ziplock bags, or how to get the perfect shot of the sunset. If you make it to the end of this video, there is a pretty nice one. I sped up the middle section so you can get there faster :) Here’s to our resident astrophysicist Chris Williams!

Just wrapped up a week of training on Soyuz and station with our crew for Expedition 75. Our training included emergencies on station and Soyuz. We brought it all together from an emergency on station (ammonia or fire in photos) that caused us to move to the Soyuz.
