GPT-6 Astra has the best result yet on the Bach Benchmark. Its chorale contains no voice-leading errors, and its harmonic palette is sophisticated enough to include a Neapolitan sixth chord. More importantly, it is the first model to ever write passing tones on this benchmark, a significant leap in musical understanding. Extra High effort. Prompt below: “In LilyPond (version 2.24), write a 4-part chorale in the style of Bach, 3/4 time, G minor. Use two staves -- soprano and alto on the top staff, tenor and bass on the bottom staff. Respond with only the code block.”

Claude Opus 5.5 writes a fugue in the style of Bach. I called Astra’s fugue the most impressive musical feat I’d ever seen from an LLM, and this is just as good. The circle-of-fifths sequence beginning at 1:13 is beautiful. The interplay of voices is natural and satisfying. LLMs are getting to the point where their music is good enough to listen to for pure enjoyment.

I gave Claude Opus 5.5 the same 4 measures of Corelli that I gave to Astra and told it to write a complete flute sonata. The results are just as good. As in the fugue I posted earlier today, I’m impressed by Opus’s ability to write compelling sequences; the one beginning at 3:26 is especially effective. I also enjoyed the chromatic bass line at 3:46, which I think Opus correctly referred to as a “lament bass” in its chain-of-thought, as well as the Phrygian cadence, which perfectly sets up the return to the tonic in the final movement. It’s amazing that LLMs now have this level of musical knowledge at their command.

GPT-6 Astra attempts the impossible: Write a fugue in E major without using the note E. The results are strange, but also rather... pleasant? Relaxing? I don’t know, but I like it. (Ultra effort. Prompt: “In LilyPond, write a fugue for organ in E major without ever using the note E (or its enharmonic spellings).”

Opus 5.5 on Extra High effort achieves a great result on the Bach Benchmark. The cadential figure in measure 3 is pure Bach, a mainstay of his chorales. No LLM before Opus 5.5 has used it, so I was glad to see it. I would put this chorale on par with Astra’s.

Grok 4.7 (High) on the Bach Benchmark. Not very impressive. Few outright errors, but lots of awkwardness.

Claude Opus 5.5 writes the opening largo of a trio sonata in the style of Corelli. Beautiful! The suspension chains, the harmonic turns, the subtlety of the textures, the way the violins share the melody -- this is a fantastic imitation of one of the Baroque period’s greatest composers. I could listen to this all day.

I’m going to have to revise my opinion that LLMs can’t do Romantic music, because apparently Opus 5.5 can. This Strauss waltz blew me away. Prompt 1: “In LilyPond, write a waltz for piano in the style of Johann Strauss II.” Prompt 2: “Now orchestrate it.”
