14 June 1940 | The Germans transferred a group of 728 Polish men from the prison in Tarnów to the newly established Auschwitz concentration camp. The group included soldiers of the September campaign, members of independence underground organisations, school pupils and students, and a small group of Polish Jews. They were given numbers from 31 to 758. This event is considered to be the beginning of the operation of this German Nazi concentration camp that less than two years later was transformed and also became an extermination camp. Of the 728 deported prisoners deported on 14 June 1940, 325 survived the war, 292 perished, while the fate of 111 is unknown to date. 223 registration photographs of them are preserved in the Archives of the Auschwitz Memorial. In the video below, you can see all of them.

"Is Memory Enough in the 21st Century?" is the theme of the international educational conference organized by the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, which will take place from June 30 to July 2, 2025. We invite experts from various fields to participate, primarily representatives of museums, memorial sites, universities, as well as other specialists and experts whose work focuses on the history and memory of World War II, Auschwitz, the Holocaust, and other genocides. We encourage participation in a discussion on the significance of memory in shaping the modern world and our shared moral responsibility. “We deeply believe that an international debate will provide a unique opportunity to examine the main topic from multiple perspectives and to jointly seek solutions to contemporary dangers and challenges, especially given that, according to the Global Peace Index 2024, the number of ongoing conflicts in the world is at its highest since World War II,” said Andrzej Kacorzyk, Director of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust (ICEAH). “Unfortunately, we are witnessing the resurgence of dehumanizing, antisemitic, and racist ideologies, as well as the emergence of new tensions and international conflicts. The aim of the conference is therefore to reflect on the role of memory in facing contemporary challenges, to explore how sites commemorating past crimes can contribute to building a more peaceful and stable world, and to develop new ways of speaking and teaching about this increasingly distant past so that it retains its relevance and meaning in the 21st century,” emphasized Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński, Director of the Museum. Applications for participation in the conference are accepted via an online form until March 16, 2025. ONLINE FORM: DRAFT OF THE PROGRAM: The number of places is limited. Information on the results of the recruitment process will be sent by March 20, 2025. Participants who meet the formal requirements will be selected based on the order of applications. A prerequisite for active participation in the conference is the payment of a registration fee of 200 PLN. The organizer provides accommodation in double- and triple-occupancy rooms and meals (from June 30 to July 2). The working language of the conference will be English. The organizer will provide simultaneous translation of part of the program into Polish.

Podcast: the film chronicle of the liberation of Auschwitz The Auschwitz camp was liberated on January 27, 1945, by soldiers of the Red Army. Well-known are the scenes captured by Soviet cameramen, which, although not showing the exact moment of liberation, are important documents revealing the crimes committed by the Germans in Auschwitz. It is essential to remember that some of the film material was created for propaganda purposes. Edyta Chowaniec from the Film Archive of the Museum explains the circumstances of the creation of the so-called Auschwitz Liberation Chronicle. Listen to the podcast:

Auschwitz I. Block 10 A block in which, from April 1943, the gynecologist Carl Clauberg’s experimental station was located. From 150 to 400 Jewish women were quartered there, and he conducted sterilization experiments on them. They were officially listed in the camp records as “female prisoners for experimentation.” Some of them died during the experiments, and many were specially put to death for autopsy purposes. The windows of the building, looking out on the courtyard of Block 11 where the Death Wall was located, were permanently covered with wooden panels so that the women could not observe the executions taking place there. In May 1944, the experimental station was moved to the so called camp extension. This historical building awaits a conservation process.

They were condemned for helping three other prisoners from the surveying squad in their escape in mid-January 1943. They were: Stanisław Stawiński (No. 6569), Czesław Marcisz (No. 26891), Janusz Skrzetuski-Pogonowski (No. 253), Edmund Sikorski (No. 25419), Jerzy Woźniak (No. 35650), Józef Wojtyga (No. 24740), Zbigniew Foltański (No. 41664), Bogusław Ohrt (No. 367), Leon Rajzer (No. 399), Tadeusz Rapacz (No. 36043), Józef Gancarz (No. 24538) and Mieczysław Kulikowski (No. 25404). The nooses were placed around the necks of the prisoners. The camp commandant Rudolf Höss stepped forward from the group of SS men present and started to read the sentences. He did not finish. Janusz Skrzetuski, as an expression of protest, pushed away the stool on which he was standing and hanged himself. SS officers then ran to the condemned men, yanked the stools from under their feet, and finished the execution.

18 February 2025 | Auschwitz Survivor Marian Turski passed away. He was a historian, journalist, and member of the International Auschwitz Council. Marian Turski was born on June 26, 1926, as Moshe Turbowicz in Druskininkai. During World War II, he was displaced to the Litzmannstadt ghetto and later deported to Auschwitz. In January 1945, he was evacuated on a “death march” to the Buchenwald camp. He was liberated in Theresienstadt. He was 98 years old. We encourage you to listen to Marian Turski's speech, which he delivered on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi camp Auschwitz on January 27, 2020. "If you are indifferent, you will not even notice it when upon your own heads, and upon heads of your descendants, some another Auschwitz falls from the sky.” Video: Text: We remember and learn from his words. 'Education is not just pedagogy in the sense of “how to convince” and “how to teach.” It is, most of all, philosophy. Therefore, if I may say something to educators: whatever you teach, whatever you say, remember that values in hell and that in normal life are different. One cannot assess events in hell on the principles of a normal moral code." (Marian Turski)
