I have never seen Maestro (probably never will) but I reference this scene *all* the time. Not even the "reining it in" part but him saying that you walk outside in NYC and run into people you love. Like yes this happens to me all the time. I just had a Maestro Moment™ tonight.

I adore the final moments of Ozu's An Autumn Afternoon so much: the way the shot pattern anticipates Hirayama's desire to look up the stairs before cutting back to him, the shift in the score, the sadness of seeing these familiar rooms so dark and empty. It makes me cry.
