I must express my profound gratitude to the former President, His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, for not only gracing my 60th birthday colloquium with his presence, but also for graciously serving as the Chairman of the occasion. President Obasanjo’s role in the development and strengthening of democracy in Nigeria and across Africa cannot be overemphasised. As an elder statesman, his enduring commitment to democratic ideals and nation building remains a reference point for generations. In moments of reflection, it is important to acknowledge both the responsibility of leadership and the people who shared in that journey. From the very beginning, when our honourable colleagues saddled us with the responsibility of helming the affairs of the Green Chambers as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, we were determined to run an inclusive legislature, irrespective of party affiliation, and most importantly, an independent legislature that truly served the Nigerian people whom we had the privilege to represent. We approached this responsibility with honesty of purpose, clarity of conscience, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right for the institution and the nation. My profound gratitude goes to my longtime friend and dear brother, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, who not only championed the 60th birthday celebration but also chaired the organising committee of distinguished men and women. I thank him as well for his kind words. Like me, Emeka is an ardent believer in the greater Nigerian dream. I have no doubt that a new Nigeria will emerge. – AWT
