April 1, 1996. 320-lb umpire John McSherry suffers a massive heart attack and dies on the field, seven pitches into opening day in Cincinnati. The most horrific/heartbreaking thing I've ever seen in a sporting event. 😥 If you don't want to watch it, please don't watch it.

'The Gambler' (1974). Terrific movie about a compulsive sports gambler. In this scene, James Caan's character has $50,000 ($330,000 in 2026 dollars) on the Lakers at a pick 'em. He already owes roughly the same amount to a different bookie, played by Paul Sorvino. Not ideal.
