🇺🇸 September 14, 2001. Ground Zero. President Bush climbed onto a wrecked fire truck with a retired FDNY man named Bob Beckwith and a bullhorn. A worker in the pile yelled that he could not hear him. Bush: “I can hear you! I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!” Video from National Archives

🇺🇸 He was wearing a bulletproof vest under the FDNY fleece. A Secret Service agent disguised as an umpire stood a few feet away with a gun. Other agents were dressed as groundskeepers. Officials asked him to throw Game 1 in Phoenix. Safer. Bush’s answer was New York or not at all. It was game 3 of the World Series. Steinbrenner got frisked on the way in. He had bounced a first pitch in Milwaukee that season in dress shoes. This time he wore rubber soles. He warmed up under the stands. Derek Jeter asked him: “Are you going to throw from the mound or from in front of it?” Bush asked what he thought. “Throw from the mound. Or else they’ll boo you. Don’t bounce it.” He walked past the short rubber. All the way to 60 feet, 6 inches. Todd Greene was behind the plate. Posada was still in the bullpen with Clemens. He said later it was the most nervous he ever was as president. Not because of the vest. Because he could not bounce it. He threw a strike.

🇺🇸 8:30 p.m., September 11, 2001. President Bush addresses the nation from the Oval Office. It is the first time America sees him back in the White House. He had started the day in a second-grade classroom in Sarasota. Then Barksdale. Then Offutt. Then Andrews. The speech lasted four minutes. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” Toward the end he recited Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.” National Archives, NAID 6171390

🇺🇸 The true story behind the song “Take Me Home, Country Roads” from a WVU graduate The song was released in 1971. WVU began the tradition of singing it at games in 1972. The songwriters, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, got the idea for the song riding down Clopper Road in Montgomery County, Maryland. They are husband and wife. The songwriters have confirmed the song is about West Virginia. It’s not about Western Virginia. Bill originally wanted to write the song about his home state of Massachusetts, but couldn’t get the cadence and syllable count right. Danoff and Nivert opened for John Denver in DC in 1970. Later that night they played the song for Denver who loved it. They all stayed up that night finalizing the lyrics. John Denver had not yet even been to West Virginia when he recorded the song. Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah River were added because they sounded poetic. They are also physically present in Jefferson County, WV. Video: John Denver playing Country Roads at dedication of Mountaineer Field in 1980. It’s a beautiful song and I love hearing it, especially after Mountaineer wins!

🇺🇸 Gettysburg 163 Live: July 2nd, 4:45 PM The Irish Brigade prepares to advance into the deadly Wheatfield. First, they experience an absolute first in U.S. military history. Before they step forward, Father William Corby climbs onto a large boulder. The men stand at order arms as he addresses them. Catholics and Protestants alike then fall to their knees while Father Corby delivers a general absolution. This is the first time such a ceremony has ever been performed in the United States military. It is a powerful and historic moment. Reminding them of their sacred duty, Corby warns that the Catholic Church refuses Christian burial to any soldier who turns his back upon the foe or deserts his flag. Moments later, Hancock orders the Irish Brigade into some of the fiercest fighting of the entire battle.
