Few cleaner examples of the ‘illusory truth effect’ than the hockey rumour mill. Who wants to bet that some guy put it out there that Landon might want to go to Minnesota because his girlfriend is going to another school in Minnesota (🤨) based on deductive reasoning rather than any real information and somehow this stuck and now Minnesota finds its way on every Landon DuPont “possible destination” list as people regurgitate this unsourced bit of speculation.

You could fill a gymnasium with the prominent Canadian hockey people who were flat out wrong about the relative advantage of the CHL’s game-heavy schedule. We’re less than a year removed from the WHL commissioner openly mocking the idea of “pumping iron and drinking smoothies” to a near consensus amongst ‘NHL 1st round draft pick defencemen” that they’re better off playing in a league with half as many games.

In a recent interview on Guy Flaming’s “The Pipeline Show” WHL commissioner Dan Near concedes that the NCAA is “business class” but cautions that “playing a Friday and Saturday schedule and then pumping iron and drinking smoothies all week” will make you soft and ill-prepared for professional hockey as chartered flights (or an otherwise well-resourced hockey program) deny you the character building opportunities of twelve hour bus trips through Saskatchewan in January. Quite the message for the 26 WHL kids (with remaining major junior eligibility) that will leave to play in the NCAA this fall. Will our young hedonists come home to Canada gritless and effete? We’ll soon find out.
