BREAKING: Pro-Palestine activists have disrupted a presentation by Werner Vogels, Amazon vice president and Chief Technology Officer, at the UN’s “AI for Good” summit in Switzerland. Palestinian civil society strongly condemns the UN International Telecommunication Union’s shameful partnership with criminal tech companies in this summit, particularly Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Cisco, Oracle, and IBM. In providing cloud infrastructure and AI technologies to the Israeli war ministry, these companies are deeply complicit in Israel's military occupation, apartheid and genocide against Indigenous Palestinians. Project Nimbus, the joint $1.22 billion contract between Google and Amazon signed in 2021, provides cloud and AI tech services to the Israeli government and the Israeli military. It enables the Israeli military to run deadly AI programs such as Lavender and Gospel — crucial to its ongoing, livestreamed genocide in Gaza. We call for global pressure on the UN and its member States to end all UN partnership and contracts with these and similarly complicit corporations, and on Amazon and Google to drop their genocidal Project Nimbus.

As workers celebrate the power of organized labor this US Labor Day, the BDS movement, led by the largest Palestinian coalition including nearly all Palestinian trade unions, renews our call to workers and unions in the US for meaningful solidarity to end complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide and other crimes against our people. An injury to one is an injury to all. Until freedom, justice, dignity and equality are realized for all workers, including Palestinians, the call for meaningful and principled solidarity remains.

The often mentioned $3.8 billion the US sends to Israel each year in military funding, as part of its MOU, is only a tiny fraction of the real cost that US taxpayers actually pay to finance and arm Israel’s endless wars of aggression, war crimes, military occupation, apartheid and genocide. Leading economists, including Harvard war budgeting expert Linda Blimes, estimate the Iran war will exceed $1 trillion – yes, you’ve read it correctly! – in long term costs to US taxpayers. The US could be funding schools, healthcare, housing and jobs for its people, but has instead chosen to fund Israel’s wars. $1 trillion for Israel’s wars, austerity and rising costs for US taxpayers – not to mention US complicity in international crimes.
