My latest guest on Rewilding the World, George Monbiot, famously described Britain’s upland hills as ‘sheepwrecked’. By seeking out tree seedlings, sheep ensure that no trees grow at all. Only a few plant species are able to survive their onslaught. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts.

Reading George Monbiot’s Feral a decade ago opened my eyes to the truly dire state of nature in Britain, and to the notion that rewilding is the big idea which can turn things round. George is a truly brilliant and articulate nature campaigner and I feel so lucky to have had him on Rewilding the World. Available now wherever you get your podcasts.

African Parks made the astoundingly bold move of buying out a bankrupt white rhino farm in South Africa to rescue two thousand of these endangered giants. Now they’re busy translocating them across parks and reserves in Africa, often to places which haven’t seen rhinos for generations. The logistical challenges are immense. This is one of the boldest rewilding initiatives in Africa, ever. In the latest episode of Rewilding the World I talk with African Parks’ Don Jooste who is in charge of it. The Somerset Levels was once England's most precious wetland landscape, our Camargue or Danube Delta, known as the Avalon Marshes, the birthplace of England. This amazing watery landscape has been engineered, drained and desecrated beyond recognition and at vast expense to taxpayers, for little or no gain. Now though, at long last, change is in the air.

I was lucky enough to interview one of the most impactful architects of rewilding in Europe, Dutchman Wouter Helmer. Despite being the most densely populated, intensively farmed and heavily developed country in Europe, The Netherlands is a rewilding powerhouse. Wouter's key insight was simply that rewilding offers the most effective way to protect communities from flooding which has blighted the Netherlands for centuries. As a result, the country is now threaded with fat, vibrant corridors of nature, teeming with wildlife. Available now wherever you get your podcasts.
