I was about to ship a boring loading state and caught myself. In today's world, there's no excuse not to spend an extra hour to inject some whimsy and fun. I like how this "Newton's Cradle" animation turned out (especially subtle jiggle of the middle shapes).

One of our biggest onboarding challenges is earning trust to allow full photos access. Sundrop analyzes all photos on-device; photos are never uploaded to a server. Nevertheless, that has to come through. The pattern we landed on: First, we use a permission "preheat". It's positioned such that if you tap "Allow Full Access" your finger will be in the right place when the OS permission comes. Also, the blue bleeds through the mask, highlighting the button. But, if you tap "Select Photos" or "Don't Alllow", we show a dedicated sheet explaining our policy. We let users know they can inspect our network activity anytime with Apple’s App Privacy Report.

The habit I am most proud of and that has had the biggest impact in my life is exercising 30+ minutes every day. Currently on a 271 day streak.

You can now increment habits over the course of a day. Little detail I'm fond of: how the increment springs out of the button and "stacks up" if you keep tapping. (h/t: We stole this detail from the +15s skip interaction in Rishi Mody ツ's Neuecast podcast app.)

X’s in-app browser is cool, but it makes saving links via the share extension a real pain on mobile. (IYKYK.) We’ve solved this with a neat new trick. Now, when you save an X post to Matter that contains a URL, we ask if you want to save the link or the post. TLDR: If you want to save an article linked in a post, just save the post directly from your feed! You can thank Hunter for this clever, "obvious in retrospect" idea.

I'm delighted to introduce Sundrop – a private photo app for parents. ☀️ Sundrop finds your best photos and turns them into delightful keepsakes. See your kids side-by-side at the same age. Watch timelapses of them growing up. Relive your family's week. And lots more. Everything happens on your iPhone; your photos never touch our servers. (We wouldn't trust a company with our photo libraries, either.) Sundrop has brought a lot of joy to our own families. We hope it does the same for yours!

New onboarding sequence I've spent an inordinate amount of time on over the past week.

Someone just dm'd me: "i've been trying to find the page where you curated many great articles to read. i spent quite some time on google and my history but no luck." The answer is Read Something Wonderful! tbh I hadn't thought about it in some time. Fun flipping through it again.
