Scottish Gaelic in Canada Here is a clip from 1946 showing Cape Bretoners singing a traditional song in the Scottish Gaelic language. Although much declined, there are still close to 4,000 Scottish Gaelic speakers in Atlantic Canada. Together, Scottish Gaelic and Irish were the third largest spoken language group in Canada at the time of Confederation,with hundreds of thousands of speakers. The traditional custom shown here is called "waulking," otherwise known as "fulling," and is a part of the woollen clothmaking process.
