In today's episode of solar is a scam. Cooking classic rice and beans with fish stew on my induction burner. All using "fraudulent" self generated electricity from solar. Have 2 AC on, a fridge and freezer plus multiple lights and TV and Fan.. you general stuff in a 4 room apartment. Guess my total power consumption?

I smiled when I saw this tweet. There is one fundamental thing about first principles engineering: you always arrive at the same conclusions as other engineers working from the same fundamentals. About a year ago, when I was planting the seed for my home power-management automation, I got a bunch of these. I also wired every single power-hungry appliance for future connection to smart relays. The goal was: A: Dump excess solar into loads like water heaters, ACs, water pumps, etc. B: During bad weather and low battery, automatically shed non-essential loads while keeping the lights on. I also made the deliberate choice to pay the premium for Victron because of its open ecosystem. My plan was to implement the automation using Node-RED. Back then, Victron hadn't implemented this feature natively. Seeing Victron eventually implement the feature, and choose Shelly as its partner, was a nice validation of my original chain of thought. I'm planning a thread and blog post about my take on smart homes and automation, and how I designed my house from the ground up to be smart. From using lights as a house notification system... To smart CCTV with advanced object recognition that can detect faces, license plates, humans, cats and dogs... All using free and open-source software, completely cloud-free. Watch this thread 🧵

My home’s greywater drains into the estate’s common drainage, which eventually flows into a nearby river. Anticipating that the drainage could harbor all sorts of crawlies, we installed an in line non return valve. This ensures one way flow of greywater out of the house and prevents anything from the drainage from entering, keeping snakes, rodents, and roaches out of the plumbing. The system is a first in a layered defence we installed to make the house roaches, rats and crawlies proof. One day I will share more.

This place comes alive at night. Families picnicking, kids playing and sliding at the foot of the statue. It’s in an exclusive neighborhood yet open and accessible to everyone. Nigeria has a lot to learn. Video was taken around 10pm.

Just finished backing bread with my electrical oven on top of generating over ₦11,000 of electricity which I would have paid for if I had used power from my Band A grid Tariffs. The bread came out well sha.. I started backing late afternoon. Still.. Battery is at 97%.. Receipt is here
