When I was 35, I couldn’t bench 185 pounds for a single rep. This morning, at 61, I woke up thinking about 250. Fasted. Still in my pajamas. I hit a lifetime PR. At some point, we have to stop asking what’s “normal”… & start raising the bar. Literally & figuratively.

Some people will watch this video and notice the suboptimal form, the slightly uneven path of the dumbbells, or some other part of the set that doesn’t meet their standard. Fair enough. But here’s what I see: At 61, I’m still getting stronger. Im still building resilience. Im still working to improve wherever I can. And now I get to help hundreds of others do the same. Go Bills😂

Humbling. No other way to describe my first day training for The Kettlebell Mile. I started slow, but I’m committed to working up to a full mile “run” with this thing. Some folks are criticizing Andrew D. Huberman, Ph.D. for “promoting” a reckless & dangerous challenge like this after his great podcast convo with Pavel Tsatsouline. My take? Spending your life on the couch with a remote in one hand and a beer in the other is far more dangerous.

I’m 61 years old & a little more than 7 years into a well-formulated low carb diet. I haven’t had any carbs since yesterday—heck, I haven’t had any food at all since yesterday… Decided to squeeze a quick workout into my 1 pm “lunch” break… 255 pounds went up pretty well for an old man who doesn’t eat many carbs, don’t you think?

In September 2018, I got 11 reps at 225. A lifetime first. Four weeks later, I was diagnosed with cancer. Back then, I honestly didn’t believe I’d ever reach that level of strength again. I’m thankful every day to be wrong about that… and I love helping others discover they’re wrong about their limits, too.

Feeling about as strong as I can ever remember. And this is while losing weight. I believe I now understand why I lost so much strength and muscle mass during a weight loss folly about 15 years… it really came down to two words… anyone care to guess? PS: Definitely going to find an incline bench. Probably thing I need most right now for my basement gym.

Finally getting back to pull-ups after a 3-month hiatus. Body weight was 218 pounds this morning which is 4 pounds lighter than it was on Thanksgiving morning. I’d very much like to be able to do 14 good reps, which will be possible when I lose about 10 more pounds.

I’m 60. Just benched 260 for 6 reps. So… • Why is my strength still increasing as I approach my 61st birthday? • Why have I kept off 80+ pounds of fat for 7+ years? • Why do board-certified obesity docs (some who’ve blocked me) still claim lifestyle change is “unsustainable”? Maybe it’s not the patients who are failing. Maybe it’s the playbook.🤔

This morning’s shoulder workout was intense & showed signs of increasing strength. And for those of you following along, this video should not be taken as advice that you should necessarily do this exercise with 50-pound dumbbells—or even that you should do dumbbell presses at all😂 As always, I’m sharing my journey… Take what you want. Leave the rest. Cheers!
