Probably the first time I (and no doubt everyone else) became aware of this incredible system was seeing it in Thunderball (1965), albeit with a B-17 rather than a C-130. Not sure I’d fancy it either (Claudine Auger is a different matter…😍)

Rear-crew evacuation test on a Vulcan - in anti-flash white so no later than 1963 Probable demonstration of the ‘whoopee cushion’ assisted escape seats retrofitted to the fleet I guess another AEOp standing by in the spare seat as I understand Vulcans couldn’t fly without one?

Heathrow Airport is 80, and today marks the 30th anniversary of this unique air display commissioned to mark its 50th birthday. In 1996 normal ops were suspended for 30 min for this incredible fly past of types associated with LHR over its history. A truly unrepeatable event.

Stansted Airport (1980). Michael Rodd (remember him?) extols the virtues of London’s 3rd airport (then 4th in traffic, behind Luton). Back then it cost well over £100 to fly but only 60p to park. Today you can fly for as little as 99p (minus taxes) but pay over £100 to park.

BAC 1-11 G-ASYD landing on just 500m of remaining runway at Brooklands (1994). The aircraft, a former BAE test bed, was being delivered to the Brooklands Museum. Fire cover was provided by a tender on loan from Biggin Hill & the local fire brigade. 🎥 AndysVideo (link in 🧵⬇️)

Launch of the BA Shuttle LHR-GLA (1975). Services to BFS followed (1976), EDI (1977) & MAN (1979). Pay on board, guaranteed seat, back-up a/c (usually a BAC 1-11) standing by. Revolutionary then, but while the callsigns remain on the routes the concept disappeared long ago.

London Heathrow Airport (c.1966) A remarkable time capsule, from the 1/- (5p) spectator parking & street signs to the astonishing variety of aircraft on show - no wonder plane spotting was a big thing at the time. Not to mention the mechanical Dalek ride on the roof garden!

Serious consideration was given to fitting rear crew ejector seats to the V-Force. On 1 July 1960 Doddy Hay became the only man to eject from the rear compartment of a V-Bomber, at 1,000ft/250kt over Chalgrove. The aircraft was a Bomber Command Development Unit Vickers Valiant.

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the loss of BA911, a BOAC 707 which broke up due to abnormally severe turbulence (7.5G+) over Mt Fuji🇯🇵 Largely forgotten today (only the crew were British, pax were mostly US) it is still the second worst disaster involving a British aircraft
