Songti (宋体), a typeface of Chinese characters, emerged to meet the needs of printing technology. During the Song Dynasty, culture flourished and the printing industry developed dramatically. From the Southern Song period onward, printing workshops in places like Lin’an began to produce fonts resembling what we now call “printing-style” characters, later known as Fangsongti (仿宋体, imitation Song style). In the Ming Dynasty, literati greatly admired books printed with Song-era carved blocks. To cope with the wear and tear on printing blocks, engravers thickened the vertical strokes and the ending strokes (serifs) of the Fangsong style, yet they continued to call this typeface “Songti.” The modern understanding of what is generally called “Songti” was essentially formed through this process.
