Chandigarh was built on the land of more than 30 villages, majority of which were Jat settlements. It lay in the Puadh region derived from Purab (east) and Adha (half) literally meaning the ‘eastern half’ of Punjab, a region recognized for its distinct language.

Professor Jodhka explains how Jats settled Haryana and made it livable and also highlights their free spirit and lack of religiosity.

The Jat Rajput rivalry, once prominent in Punjab and now observed in Haryana and Rajasthan, is strikingly portrayed by Giani Sher Singh in 'Pracheen Panth Prakash'. He describes a scene where Ranghar Rajputs taunt Jat Sikhs 'Tum ho Jat, Hum Hain Rajput' during sack of Morinda.
