Wife just sent me this video of early Saturday morning of me and my daughter looking for sea shells. In 30 years I will probably be willing to give up most of my net worth to go back this period of my life. Currently my daughter thinks I’m still cool, and I like that

After good years in hedge funds, I dreaded the January 2nd do it all over again. After bad years in hedge funds, I dreaded the January 2nd better start off well to get over the high water mark so I don’t get fired. In 2024 business profitability was good yet momentum going into this year was scary bad. 2025 was no bueno. This year business profitability fell as revenues declined yet current backlog (could be catch up from a slow 2025) is robust and the team will work a little next week (normally we are closed all week). Business ownership has more duration (don’t need to focus as much on annual performance as public markets) when you own 100 pct without investors, but right now I absolutely want to forget 2025 and am looking forward to a fresh start in 2026.

SMB baby! Driving in to factory at 415am and foreman calls to say everybody snowed in Paterson so nobody can work. I say fak that. I’m driving and will pick up anyone that wants to work today. He calls around. 5am I have picked up 3 team members. They start working. Parking lot not plowed even though maintenance guy said he would. I need this dealt with or no freight can be picked up tomorrow. Equipment issues so maintenance guy says he can’t do it. Fak. Calling to find someone in New Jersey for commercial snow plow impossible today. Will deal with that when people are at work. No water. Fak. Didn’t leave heat on when we left Saturday. Probably frozen pipes. Call plumber to come. Yes frozen pipes. $1500 later and 4 hours later everything fixed. Call every snow plow company within 40 minute drive. Those that pickup laugh when I ask for a plow today as they are booked the next 48 hours. In my industrial park I see a stone company w heavy equipment. I ask if they will plow. No, don’t have liability insurance. Sorry. Employee at the stone shop calls a friend who has insurance and he’s willing to plow this afternoon. Behind on jobs, skeleton crew, bad weather, etc. I’ve been up since 4am and it’s 130pm. What a Monday!

Short weekend trips can be such effective resets. Woke up at 4am on Saturday to go to factory. Told team priorities. Picked up wife and daughter at 630 and drove down to Cape May and early check in to hotel around 10. Brunch. Beach. Shopping. Dinner. Sunday was early breakfast, beach and lunch before returning home by 5pm. Woke up today refreshed and ready for the week. This coming weekend is Kansas City to visit mom. My daughter excited to see grandma and her cousins.

Seller to me in 2022: “Yes if you need to operate remotely it’s easy. I’m sure it can be done from Kansas if need be.” Other buyside guys: “You should automate the factory open in the morning. Just put everything on timers. Seems obvious and easy.” This is me walking into factory at 420am today in May 2026 after doing to start up every morning since October 2022 (missed zero days). Every one of my employees has missed weeks of work due to illness or personal appointments. I’ve missed zero. Timers huh? This is what paying off almost $1mm of debt in 3 years and making a 40 pct after tax return on a 7 figure equity check looks like. While I go out every 20 minutes to turn up the heats, I’m responding to customer emails and setting up freight for the day. 90 pct leverage and hire a GM? Note that 100 pct of closed searchers doing 90 pct leverage have told me they would never recommend it. Ever

I’ve been at the factory since 430am this Saturday. We are busy. A lot of people recently have asked me given multiples for small businesses if it makes more sense to start from scratch versus buying. Please look at this video and tell me if you could start this business from scratch. I couldn’t. I came from a world of excel and financial models where I would sometimes be in group meetings where someone wld ask the CFO of Google how we should think about Search growth long term. All those pallets of film, I ordered. I scheduled all the orders. I know what has to ship on Monday and I know how long each job should take. The warehouse of film is the on deck group of film. I know what customers need orders first. It’s all in excel and in my head. I had to learn this by myself. There is no owners manual. You can’t google how to do this. There is no GM.
