How beautiful is this spotless 1960s street in England. Neat terraced houses all with their original wooden windows, and all with tidy front gardens and pretty flowers instead of driveways.

The English countryside in 1910 and a rare example of a clapper stile gate. The horizontal beams are attached at the centre and normally kept in place by weights, so you can create a low point by pushing down on the other end.

I’m fascinated by the Victorians and their etiquette and strict social norms. I wonder what they would find jarring in 2025? Casual dress in public? Informal language and manners? Public displays of affection? Dining habits? Faces glued to mobile phones? What else would make them head for their fainting couches?

England, fifty years ago. A beautiful film of Saltaire, the Victorian model village in West Yorkshire. Lovely stone buildings by the river, a church, and a peaceful charm that feels like it belongs to another century.
