British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died aged 19 following a serious accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The Welsh rider, younger brother of professional cyclist and Olympian Josh Tarling, was representing the NSN Development Team on the 166.8km stage from Melgaço to Fafe. Portuguese media reported that Tarling was involved in a collision with a vehicle. Race organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed his death following what they described as a “serious accident” but did not provide details about its cause. Emergency medical teams responded but were unable to save him. “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” NSN said. “Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.” Racing was stopped following the accident, and the scheduled podium ceremony in Fafe was cancelled as a mark of respect. The funeral of 15-year-old Joe Carthy, the youngest of five teenagers killed in a head-on collision on Ireland’s M9 motorway, has taken place in Athy, Co Kildare. Joe died alongside Jack Kennedy, Alex McCarthy, Kamil Pustkowski and Jeremy O’Brien when the BMW in which they were travelling collided with a Hyundai carrying a family during the early hours of Sunday. Joe’s coffin arrived at the church in a white horse-drawn carriage. Mourners wearing T-shirts bearing his image followed behind, while others carried framed photographs. “We gather with sorrow in our hearts,” the priest told mourners as he extended his sympathy to Joe’s family. A heavy Garda presence surrounded the funeral, with checkpoints established on roads into Athy. A separate funeral Mass was held for Alex McCarthy in Carlow, where a vigil was also planned for the three sisters and seven-year-old boy seriously injured in the other vehicle. More than 40 people are believed to have been trapped after a passenger train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex, with three carriages reportedly overturning onto their sides. Emergency services are providing first aid at the scene. However, a Department for Transport source has told the BBC that the latest understanding is there are "no serious injuries or fatalities". Images seen by BPI News appear to show severely warped railway tracks beside the derailed train, while people can be seen standing on top of a carriage. The cause of the derailment has not been established, and officials have not confirmed whether the apparent track deformation caused the incident or was a result of the derailment. Southern Rail said the train derailed between Haywards Heath and Lewes. British Transport Police, firefighters, paramedics, Sussex Police and Network Rail are responding. All lines through Lewes have been closed, affecting services between: • Brighton and Lewes • Haywards Heath and Lewes • Seaford/Eastbourne and Lewes Passengers have been advised to delay their journeys or use alternative routes, with major disruption expected into Thursday evening. #Lewes #TrainDerailment #EastSussex

A woman was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis during a federal enforcement operation, with sharply conflicting accounts emerging. DHS and the White House say the agent fired defensive shots after the woman attempted to use her car as a weapon while officers were blocked in snow. Minnesota officials say video footage shows the agent had room to move clear, was not struck by the vehicle as it drove off, and that the woman was not a target of immigration enforcement. The state says she was alone in the car and that a full investigation is under way to determine whether the use of lethal force was justified. Videos circulating on social media and broadcast by local media appear to show ICE agents arriving in a silver truck, ordering the woman to exit her vehicle and one agent tugging at the driver’s door. Footage shows shots fired within seconds as the vehicle begins to move away, before crashing into a parked car. The agent appears able to move clear and is not seen being struck by the vehicle. #Minneapolis
