Remember when Jay-Z moved past kneeling so he could sell t-shirts & control the Superbowl halftime show? He’s a 🦝 who is always willing to sell out his community so he can cash in.

Angela Rye is our class enemy. While we’re fighting for reparations & an improvement to our material quality of life, she’s bragging about how well she & her Boule friends are doing. From 2020: “I’m not impoverished & I have friends who are doing very well in this country..”

Since we’re imagining what civil rights activists would want, can we imagine what James Baldwin would want from Ta-Nehisi Coates in this moment ? Baldwin probably would want the writer who wrote The Case for Reparations to stay the course & continue to fight for rights & resources of American Descendants of Slavery. Baldwin would likely tell Coates that it’s fine to write critically of Israel, as Baldwin himself did, but not to lose sight of who he’s actually fighting for. In 2026, Baldwin might look around & see that Palestinians already have effective spokespeople and that their political Uncommitted strategy was far more effective than any strategy Black Americans have to improve our quality of life. All of the civil rights activists Coates mentioned might also tell him that the boot is still on our necks, and as such, that’s our priority. We can be empathetic, but we can’t pull the boot off anyone else’s neck right now. Coates wants us to give our political capital away before we’ve effectively used it on our own behalf. That’s a mistake. Coates does the Black freedom struggle a disservice. And given that we haven’t yet freed ourselves, we have no obligation beyond symbolic to free anyone else. And I don’t even know how Coates defines “we”, given how many of the people he named are not descended from American chattel slavery. It’s a mess. I don’t see brilliance here. I see a lack of focus.

For the life of me, I can’t fathom their arrogance. Trump’s rise & the gutting of Civil Rights era gains is just as much a failure of the Black Political Class as it is a failure of Democrats more generally. Deleting comments won’t change that. And they haven’t been saying it for 20 years (as Monique Pressley says in her YouTube reply). They spent the last 10 years marginalizing the ADOS movement for aggressively challenging Democrats for how they neglect their ADOS base. The attached video is from 7 years ago when Kamala Harris first ran for president. It was obvious then that Pressley didn’t understand lineage. We never said Harris wasn’t “Black enough”. We said Harris—an Indian/Jamaican— couldn’t run on a lineage she didn’t have and we weren’t voting for Obama 2.0. We said Harris needed a serious BLACK AGENDA. Pressley said Harris was getting harsher treatment because she’s a woman. She was DEFENDING Harris. And regardless of the sexism female candidates face, Harris still needed a serious BLACK AGENDA. They should’ve been pressuring Harris instead of rallying around her. Fast forward to now and Pressley and her guest on her YouTube show are having the revelation that they *DO* need a Black agenda. That they *DO* need to be agenda driven rather than just aligned with the Democratic Party. That they are about a decade TOO LATE. They spent far too much time defending Democrats instead of pressuring them. They should get honest about that & take some responsibility for their political incompetence.
