One reason the Cubs traded for David Peterson is his grounder rate (>50%). This season, Peterson allowed 33 base hits on grounders. The Mets ranks among the worst defensively. The Cubs are decorated in gold. Here's video of all 33 base hits he gave up on the ground as a Met.

The narrative that Ian Happ doesn't hit clutch homers is not true. Since 2021, he’s hit 54 game-tying or go-ahead HRs, averaging 9 per year compared to the MLB average of 5–7. The easiest response to those saying Happ doesn't hit when it counts is this. Here's all 54 homers.

Over the last month, Cubs hitters have made 66 outs on pitches in the heart of the zone while ahead in the count. Roughly 3 outs per game on opportunity pitches. See for yourself—here’s video of every one. (Heart = pitch fully inside the strike zone, per Statcast/Savant)

Alex Bregman has a team-leading 70 outs with runners in scoring position. Nearly half were strikeouts (19) or pop-ups (14). For perspective, Joey Votto didn't hit a pop-up in 2010. It took him 6,289 plate appearances to pop up to 1B. Watch for yourself at your own risk.

Ok it's time to rewatch very Webb pitch from last night. On the bottom right I overlaid intended location (ie, where his pitch typically is thrown/Kelly sets up). I did this so we can see how much he missed. Here's some good news. Generally, he hit most of his spots or was close to it. Here's the bad news. The one changeup he left up was the killer. Webb's stretch here I think is a combination of bad luck and slightly worse location than before. I don't think it's as bad as it looks. I also think he had some good fortune before this rough spell too. So...some regression + some misfortune here. I don't think Webb is this unproductive going forward. The stuff and velo look ok. I think it does normalize, and it's just a matter of whether the baseball gods behave if he does miss.

The #1 pitcher I want for the Cubs: Reid Detmers. Detmers is 1 of 9 starters with a K% over 27.5% and BB% under 8%. - 10.2 K/9 - 2.8 BB/9 - 3.3 ER (4.1 FIP) - '26, '27, '28 team control - 100th %ile breaking pitch value Montage of every slider whiff this season (105 total!)
