![The most heartbreaking moment of the funeral in Ostrówki was the burial of 26 tiny coffins containing the remains of innocent children. It was in Ostrówki and Wola Ostrowiecka that one of the most tragic episodes of the Volhynia genocide took place on 30 August 1943. Within just a few hours, Ukrainians murdered around 1,050 Poles. The villages were then looted and burned, and the victims’ bodies were thrown into mass graves, wells and ditches. Following exhumations carried out by Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance in July and August 2026, a funeral was held for 55 Polish victims, including those 26 children. It was perhaps the most moving moment of the ceremony. On the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the Katyń Memorial at Gunnersbury Cemetery in London, Poles living in the UK gathered to honour the victims of the Katyń Massacre. Today, Marian Słomka turns 101. An RAF engineer, he is believed to be the last living Pole who served in the Royal Air Force during WW2 and still lives in the UK. Deported by the Soviets to a Gulag near Archangel, he survived against all odds. Yesterday, with deep emotion, we listened as he sang "Rozkwitają pęki białych róż" at the 65th ceremony honouring the fallen Polish airmen at the Polish Air Force Memorial in London. Thank you for your service, Sir, and Happy 101st Birthday! May you live to 200!

Have you heard Artur Rubinstein playing Chopin at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1967? Rubinstein was a Polish artist and a patriot, widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. During the signing ceremony of the Charter of the UN, he was asked to grace the ceremony with his performance. To the surprise of many, he preceded his concert with the following words: "In this hall where the great nations gather to make a better world, I miss the flag of Poland 🇵🇱 for which this cruel war was fought. So now I will play the National Anthem of Poland". Rubinstein was born on 28 January 1887.

All camps were German (…) Were it not for the Germans, the Holocaust on Polish soil would never have taken place,” said Edward Mosberg, a Holocaust survivor born in Kraków, during a visit to Auschwitz in 2019. He lost his entire family in the German camps.
