As Bunsen approaches 9 years of age, we know are heading into the back 1/4 of his life. In fact, it is said for Berners: 3 years a young dog 3 years a good dog 3 years an old dog And anything else by grace of god. We cherish Bunsen every single day. He’s a good boy.

Cats develop pretty deep bonds with their humans, BUT, they aren’t dogs! Seeing you after a long absence can overwhelm them with emotions. They will rub, purr, and demand attention. That spike in arousal can lead to chomps. It translates into: “YOU’RE BACK. I LOVE YOU. YOU SMELL WEIRD. I CANT HANDLE IT! BUT I LOVE YOU. AH!”

Look I didn’t get the big deal about kittens until we got one. They aren’t puppies, but they are just as sweet. Nobody tells you how soft and tiny they are. And the purring??? That’s a secret weapon right there.

Here is a heartwarming story. Ever since Ginger joined us, Bunsen has REALLY wanted to be her friend. He was curious about her, mesmerized by her movement, and enthralled by her presence. Early on, he followed her and just looked at her as she jumped on things that probably broke his brain. Sadly for Bunsen, Ginger wanted nothing to do with the big guy. She would occasionally bat his face if he got too close or attack his tree trunk legs. One time she tried to bite his tail. Don’t worry, Bunsen is so fluffy he never got hurt. Eventually he gave up and just let Ginger run the house- he gave her a wide berth if she was sleeping on the floor and watched her warily when she crossed in front of him while he was laying down. Yesterday Kris said LOOK and Ginger was in Bunsen’s crate. Perhaps it was to escape Bernoulli’s terror, but Bunsen was thrilled. It only lasted a hour, but Bunsen was happy. He had come off his pain meds and had been crying in pain for a while. When Ginger jumped into his crate, Bunsen stopped crying. You can see his happy wag in the video. He was over the moon she was so close to him. We will never know really what animals think, but I’d like to think they care for each other in their own way.

We were told that the new girls swim, and that their mom would take them to the river. To honor what their mom used to do we tried to get them to a place to swim as soon as possible. When they started to all swim together and Bernoulli realized it, it was a magical moment. ❤️ #bernesemountaindog #goldenretriever #newdogs #bmd #dogsofinstagram

The girls have been with us for an entire week today. Everyone is getting along beyond what we could have hoped for. Brix isn't at all concerned about the girls, the Berners love them and give them kisses all the time (I need to get it on camera!). Even frosty Beaker has accepted them as her sisters and hangs out with them all day! #goldenretriever #bernesemountaindog #dogpack #bmd #dogsofinstagram golden retriever, bernese mountain dog, dog pack, bmd, dogs of instagram

Day Two: Settling Into a New Home Day two was a calm, but subdued day. The girls stayed together, mostly on their beds. We made sure they got three big walks, and one of them we made sure Beaker went with them. She has grown to be pretty attached to them already which is really sweet. #goldenretriever #dogsoftiktok #fosterdog #petsoftiktok

A year ago a beaver moved onto our farm. He/she quickly started making dams. We let the beaver be a beaver- it wasn’t hurting anything and the journey we have been on has been amazing. We have learned so much more about beavers, our appreciation for them has grown. Beavers are keystone species. They reshape water ways to make ecosystems more diverse and able to withstand droughts and fires. Our tiny creek which was a trickle is now a true creek, with ponds behind the dams. Beavers are misunderstood. They were killed and hunted to near extinction or at least extirpation in many places. We are thrilled to share Norbert with everyone.

Joyful Chaos: First Creek Walk With the Whole Pack We are now tackling taking all of the dogs on walks and our first couple into the creek were full of joyful chaos. Libby and Lucy have questionable recall, being our new rescues, so we keep them on leash. Lucy (the copper one) appears to have much better recall than her older sister. We did spend a ton of time with Bunsen, Beaker, and Bernoulli on recall so they are pretty trustworthy- Bernoulli most of all. We do have four hands- so we got it done!! #bernesemountaindog #goldenretriever #rescue #dogsoftiktok
