Look I didn’t get the big deal about kittens until we got one. They aren’t puppies, but they are just as sweet. Nobody tells you how soft and tiny they are. And the purring??? That’s a secret weapon right there.

Here is a heartwarming story. Ever since Ginger joined us, Bunsen has REALLY wanted to be her friend. He was curious about her, mesmerized by her movement, and enthralled by her presence. Early on, he followed her and just looked at her as she jumped on things that probably broke his brain. Sadly for Bunsen, Ginger wanted nothing to do with the big guy. She would occasionally bat his face if he got too close or attack his tree trunk legs. One time she tried to bite his tail. Don’t worry, Bunsen is so fluffy he never got hurt. Eventually he gave up and just let Ginger run the house- he gave her a wide berth if she was sleeping on the floor and watched her warily when she crossed in front of him while he was laying down. Yesterday Kris said LOOK and Ginger was in Bunsen’s crate. Perhaps it was to escape Bernoulli’s terror, but Bunsen was thrilled. It only lasted a hour, but Bunsen was happy. He had come off his pain meds and had been crying in pain for a while. When Ginger jumped into his crate, Bunsen stopped crying. You can see his happy wag in the video. He was over the moon she was so close to him. We will never know really what animals think, but I’d like to think they care for each other in their own way.

Bernoulli was THRILLED to have his buddy home and Brix was so happy to see his giant friend. Brix seems to be doing just fine, but last night was scary. He started vomiting uncontrollably and crying shortly after his supper. Thankfully, the xrays showed he ate his food too fast and was a bit backed up which was an uncomfortable mix. We were told that it was good we brought him in- puking more than 4 times in a row isn’t great and the little man was on number 9 by the time he got into the pet emergency. We do mix his dry food with water, but he may just need wet food instead so we are trying that.

We wanted to wait until the vet saw Bunsen but on Sunday night he pulled something in his back and had a hard time walking. On Monday he improved, but at times had trouble laying down. Today he is doing much better, no pain walking or laying down. The vet figures it could be a similar thing (slipped disc) that happened in his neck- big dogs and older dogs are at risk for it. With rest it should go away- and it looks like it is. So the big guy is back on light activity.

💩 warning Kris is normally pretty nonplused by gross things the dogs do, but there were MOUNDS of poo and the dogs got into it. Not Bernoulli I guess, he was stunned at what Bunsen and Beaker were doing. Beaker needed a hose bath because she STUNK

A year ago a beaver moved onto our farm. He/she quickly started making dams. We let the beaver be a beaver- it wasn’t hurting anything and the journey we have been on has been amazing. We have learned so much more about beavers, our appreciation for them has grown. Beavers are keystone species. They reshape water ways to make ecosystems more diverse and able to withstand droughts and fires. Our tiny creek which was a trickle is now a true creek, with ponds behind the dams. Beavers are misunderstood. They were killed and hunted to near extinction or at least extirpation in many places. We are thrilled to share Norbert with everyone.

It’s a big day!!! Our bestest boy, our hero, our protector turns 9 today. Bunsen started out alone with us, 9 years ago and over time we have built a pack around him. He has taught them, he has protected them, and today we celebrate him. Happy Birthday Bunsen. We love you so much!

Norbert was our Beaver. He changed our creek and our lives. We miss him (or her) dearly, but what Norbert left us will last forever.
