Brix is on a FIP antiviral. The condition FIP used to kill cats with almost 100% fatality rate, but this new medicine is literally a medical miracle. It works by putting junk building blocks for the virus in Brix’s body. The virus tries to use the junk to replicate but it masses it up, killing the virus.

A couple weeks ago we took Bernoulli and Beaker in to donate blood. Beaker missed the cutoff - she’s too little and under the 55 pound cutoff. We learned a TON. I thought they would take the blood from Bernoulli’s leg/arm but NOPE they take it from the neck. Dog legs don’t have enough blood flow to easily draw from. So that meant Bernoulli had to be flipped and pinned! He did awesome. His first time was a trial run and we are going to work on some skills for the real deal which happens in about 4 months. Dog blood types are fascinating so watch for a video about that soon.

After despair and sadness early this week we have great news. Brix is off the O2 chamber, and doing amazing. The fluid has drained from his chest and abdomen. He is hungry and feisty. It’s hard to explain the medical stuff here but as simply put as possible- Brix is on antivirals for FIP- though he doesn’t present correctly for it. Brix is going for an echocardiogram tomorrow for his heart as congenital heart disease is possible. He is still a mystery, but he’s so much better.

Uh oh! Explosive diarrhea! A Cyclospora outbreak is making news- and if you are infected you get explosive diarrhea. Currently 32 states are affected and it appears to be in contaminated fruits and veggies. If you are in an outbreak area - think about cooking all of your fruits and veggies.

Four years ago a Beaver moved into our creek and transformed the tiny creek into a wetland paradise. It held water for far longer, and then sadly two years ago he left. But he left the two dams which hold water during rain and keep the creek area an amazing ecosystem!

We went in to see Brix and tell him we love him and WOW he is doing better. The treatment must have kicked in. We have to temper our expectations because he isn’t out of the woods yet, and still breathing hard, but he is up and moving around and ANGRY! He wants out! Hopefully in the morning we can have even better updates.

A year ago a beaver moved onto our farm. He/she quickly started making dams. We let the beaver be a beaver- it wasn’t hurting anything and the journey we have been on has been amazing. We have learned so much more about beavers, our appreciation for them has grown. Beavers are keystone species. They reshape water ways to make ecosystems more diverse and able to withstand droughts and fires. Our tiny creek which was a trickle is now a true creek, with ponds behind the dams. Beavers are misunderstood. They were killed and hunted to near extinction or at least extirpation in many places. We are thrilled to share Norbert with everyone.

No new developments. Brix is clinically stable which is good. He does very well and is comfortable in his oxygen incubator but deteriorates rapidly when he is outside it. The fluid situation hasn’t been solved. Everyone is working hard and pulling for him. Thank you for all of your kind words.
