A rare and breathtaking sighting! A Takin herd was spotted at Bakuchaang (~5 km below Tamzee) on 14 June afternoon by the personnels of Tourism & Forest Department of Sikkim. Such confirmed visual records are uncommon in the state, making this especially significant. Reviewed the progress of Project Great Indian Bustard (GIB) in the 91st meeting of Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) today at CASFoS, Coimbatore. It is heartening to know that second ‘jump start’ attempt executed in Naliya, Gujarat has succeeded and the chick born on 21st of May 2026 has passed the critical stage of ~40 days of survival. Besides this, the total number of chicks born in captivity in Rajasthan at Sam and Ramdevra have reached to 98. The project will soon be entering into rewilding phase for which efforts are on. The team of Wildlife Institute of India and State forest departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat are leaving no stone unturned to make the project successful.

High Five, Kuno! Female cheetah Gamini, age about 5 years, brought from Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa, has given birth to 5 cubs today. This takes the tally of the Indian born cubs to 13. This is the fourth cheetah litter on Indian soil and the first litter of cheetahs brought from South Africa. Congratulations to all, especially the team of forest officers, vets, and field staff who have ensured a stress-free environment for cheetahs, which has led to successful mating and birth of the cubs. Kuno National Park is pleased to announce the birth of a fourth cub to female cheetah Gamini. The presence of the fourth cub was confirmed during intensive monitoring by the field and veterinary teams. All four cubs are presently healthy and doing fine. This development reflects the continued commitment to scientific management and conservation under Project Cheetah, and marks another positive step in India’s cheetah reintroduction journey. The number of cheetahs in India now stands at 39, including 28 India-born cubs.
