CHIRI PAMUTEMA CHIRI PAMUTENURE! ZIFA had to outsource the Warriors home matches to Botswana, South Africa & Zambia over the past few years for want of a FIFA/CAF approved venue. Now after the SRC painstakingly worked to have the NSS meet the requisite standards some hoodlums had no qualms invading the pitch & vandalising sprinklers in addition to having running battles with the police ostensibly in protest over the result which went in the DRC's favour or sheer excitement. A soccer match can have one of 3 outcomes: a win, a loss or stalemate, whoever decides to watch the game should be prepared for either outcome, accept it & remain civil. What made the scenes @ the NSS quite regrettable is not only that this was the second international match to be hosted at the NSS after the renovations but that our memories can be so short as 26 years ago, July 9 2000; thirteen lives were lost during a stampede when the Warriors hosted Bafana Bafana in a World Cup qualifier. I hear one person died during yesterday's skirmishes, MHDSRIEP. Stadia should not be hardhat areas/Kumazivandadzoka, they should be made safe for families, children. And that safety can only be ensured if the powers that be enforce the law ruthlessly to deter hooliganism. There is video footage of the pitch invaders. They need to be identified & brought to book. & repeat offenders should be barred from attending future matches. There is no need to reinvent the wheel here. This has been done in other countries & it brought the requisite sanity. In addition to enforcing behaviour change through the law, the SRC should ensure that the pitch is impregnable either through physical barricades or security cordons, Again we have all seen this elsewhere.
