What started as a fun and relaxing day on the first full day of summer turned into a nightmare for one California mom. ⚠️🌊 Lupita Perez and her three children were nearly swept into the ocean after becoming trapped by the rising tide at Panther Beach in Santa Cruz County. But their harrowing ordeal didn't end there. Thanks to CAL FIRE crews, they all survived a little bit wiser, with a captivating story to tell and important safety lessons to share. With the help of partners like California State Parks and other high-performance agencies along the coast, CAL FIRE executes dramatic cliff and ocean rescues throughout the year. These rescues sometimes end in tragedy. That's why it's vital to respect the power of the ocean. Understanding tide charts and swell conditions is crucial for a safe visit. You can find this information online through resources like the National Weather Service or reputable surf forecasting websites. Knowing when high tide is expected and understanding the potential for strong swells can help you avoid getting caught in precarious situations, like being trapped on a beach with limited access. Here are just a few websites to check out before your next Northern California beach adventure. ➡️ ➡️ When in doubt, enjoy the ocean safely from a distance. Stick to designated paths and stay well back from cliff edges. We're grateful for the positive outcome of this rescue and want to emphasize the importance of preparation and awareness. By taking a few extra steps before your visit, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience at our incredible beaches. 🦭🐳 Santa Cruz County County of San Mateo #CaWx
