People forget what a BIG deal it was when Taylor left country music. This was at a time when there was even more pressure to stay in a genre lane and the vast majority of people who started in country and tried to go pop failed. It was never guaranteed that Taylor would be successful at pop. On top of that, Taylor had very much been heralded as the vanguard of the next generation’s country music and credited with bringing country music to a newer, younger audience. She stopped going to country music award shows after her announcement - even if she was nominated. The first CMAs without her, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley dedicated a whole portion of that year’s opening monologue to “Postpartum Taylor Swift Disorder” and she wasn’t even there.
