We are delighted to announce that the University of Cambridge has received a commitment of £190 million – the biggest individual donation to a British university in modern times – to establish the Rokos School of Government. This incredibly generous donation comes from investor and entrepreneur Chris Rokos. The mission of the new School is to equip future leaders to navigate increasingly complex domestic and global political environments in a challenging and rapidly-changing world. The Rokos School will build upon Cambridge’s world-leading expertise across the fields of public policy, politics and leadership, helping position us at the forefront of research and teaching in government and public leadership. Fundamental to the School’s operation will be its direct access to Cambridge’s renowned expertise in technology and the sciences, together with disciplines more usually associated with the social sciences, arts and humanities. Could a "universal vaccine" protect us from future virus outbreaks? 🦠 A Cambridge team has developed an entirely new way of making vaccines. Using data from virus surveillance programmes around the world, they used AI to design a ‘super antigen’. This can create a single vaccine that provides lasting protection against a broad range of viruses - like the Ebola or coronavirus group - even as they mutate into new variants. The results of the first human clinical trial of this technology found it is safe and well tolerated. This could prevent future pandemics before they even begin. Read more 👉

The Cambridge South station has arrived on time 🚆 Opened to the public last Sunday, the Network Rail station can receive over 1.8 million journeys in a year. This will be invaluable to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and the University of Cambridge. The Campus is the city's largest employment site, where over 22,000 people work 🧑🔬 This will not only make commuting easier for many workers, it will also benefit those visiting the Campus to seek treatment or find research and investment opportunities. Swifts have returned to nest in Cambridge, settling in Darwin College for the very first time 🐣 As swift numbers continue to decline, Dr Mike Rands, Master of Darwin College, explains how simple measures like installing swift nest boxes and swift bricks can help protect these remarkable birds. “One of the things that the University of Cambridge is doing to try to help recover the swift population is to put nest boxes on buildings around the University, to compensate for the fact that natural nest sites have disappeared as a result of new modern buildings,” Dr Rands explains.
