Cancel Bonds? Guys… we’re better than this. Cancel culture has never been about morality, it is essentially a crowd that has agreed on a target, and found a strange relief in turning on it together. Every few weeks the internet selects a person or a brand as a target and honestly, it’s tedious, as it is just outright boring. René Girard called this the scapegoat mechanism, the way a group discharges its own tension by uniting against a single figure. It feels righteous from the inside, but a good deal of the time it is simply relief in some superficial justice. Quietly deciding not to spend your money on something because it no longer reflects your values is not cancel culture. That is just your conscience, sweetie (pays to listen to it every now and then). Cancel culture is the coordinated effort to make sure nobody else is allowed to spend theirs either, to end a livelihood, to force a removal, to punish the brand itself rather than simply walking away from it. One is a private choice, the other is a crowd making the choice on your behalf. I would much rather we asked the quieter questions. Does the thing actually do the job? Is it worth the money? Does it sit comfortably with what I claim to believe? You can answer all three without joining a pile-on, and you will almost always land somewhere more honest than the mob does. So tell me, when was the last time you bought something purely because everyone else was talking about it?
