In Memory of Hadrian 📖 Marguerite Yourcenar evokes her fascination with the Roman emperor Hadrian. Accompanied by images of the wall he built in northern England and of statues from the British Museum, she speaks of a humanist, cultured, and peace-making emperor, with “behind him all that Greek culture to which he was devoted.”

The Terme di Nettuno (Baths of Neptune) are one of the largest and most impressive public bath complexes in the ancient port city of Ostia Antica, located just east of the theatre in Regio II, Insula IV. The baths cover an extensive square area, roughly 67 by 67 m and are especially renowned for their striking black-and-white floor mosaics featuring mythological sea scenes. The baths replaced an earlier late-first-century AD bathing facility and were built in the Hadrianic period (early 2nd century AD), with modifications continuing into the 3rd and 4th centuries. The central chamber (room 4) contains the iconic mosaic that gives the baths their modern name, a depiction of Neptune in a chariot drawn by hippocamps (sea-horses), surrounded by dolphins, tritons, and nereids (sea nymphs). To the west of the bathing rooms lies a large palaestra (exercise courtyard), flanked on three sides by a marble colonnade.
