Outside Rodeo I prison, where many political prisoners are held and families are camping outside, I chatted to opposition politician and ex political prisoner himself Juan Pablo Guanipa I didn’t realise before that he spoke English. Apparently he uses Duolingo every day. I took the opportunity to ask him about why he was at Rodeo today and what he think of the talks between the govt and part of the opposition in Venezuela.

Ministry of Communications in Venezuela not communicating. Is there a press trip or not? Can we enter by ourselves or not? Teams are leaving to try to get to La guaira themselves as fed up at the lack of information or at least someone saying there is delay. Zero communication.

Venezuelan woman in Pereira, Colombia, I’m speaking to says many buildings damaged or collapsed, people gathered in street and there is presence of emergency services working with people after earthquake. “Yo vivo en el centro de Pereira y pude evidenciar estructuras con daños significativos y otras ya colapsadas. Hay personas reunidas en las calles por temor a posibles réplicas. Por otro lado, se puede ver la presencia de los organismos de emergencia trabajando en la posible extracción en estructuras colapsadas desde el minuto uno, en conjunto con personal civil”

Comunidades de Montesano Maralboro, La Guaira piden ayuda. Todavía hay muchas familias en La Guaira que están recibiendo muy poca ayuda, especialmente las que viven más alejadas de las zonas más afectadas cerca de la costa, en las partes más altas de la montaña. En la comunidad, en particular, hay un edificio donde viven unas 10 familias. Dicen que tienen miedo de dormir dentro porque hay muchas grietas y daños en el edificio, pero están esperando una inspección para saber si es seguro. Quieren dormir en una cancha cerca con algunas carpas, pero no han recibido carpas y tampoco saben dónde conseguirlas. Un par de personas ya están durmiendo en carpas muy pequeñas en la calle, afuera del edificio, pero no hay acera y pasan muchos carros. Necesitan ayuda.

I went to chat British rescuers in Venezuela last night who are here with SERVE ON . Apart from the actual rescue efforts following the earthquake they kept talking about how welcoming Venezuelans had been, from the moment they arrived at the airport, to people showing up offering to translate and drive them around for free, to offering food and whatever else they need. Here are Matt and Vern saying a big gracias!

Andreina lives/lived in the building behind her in catia la mar. She was out at the time of the earthquake getting a key cut. Her neighbour and young daughter had recently moved next to her and were so happy with the view of the sea. They didn’t make it. Like so many others in her building. El Junquito is a small town in Venezuela - half of it in Caracas, half in La guaira. Some buildings were badly damaged by the earthquake - and unfortunately some people died in the collapsed buildings. Many here work in tourism as people come here at weekends for chicharrón, chocolate, strawberries and cream, horse riding and the cool air. But now they’re worried about the local economy. 31 people are living in tents as their homes are damaged. There were a group of men with caps who looked like govt people/ police. I asked locals and they confirmed it. Apparently Delcy Rodriguez is doing a visit here later. Who’s been helping here I asked? The response (repeated everywhere) was the people who live here and nearby have been leading the rescue and recovery effort.

Families of political prisoners and representatives of Comité por la Libertad de los Presos Políticos PROVEA Foro Penal + other orgs say there is a ‘double tragedy’ with the earthquake and the ongoing issue of political prisoners in Venezuela. There are still 368 people arbitrarily detained in the country - many held in very poor conditions, according to families and civil rights organisations

What do Venezuelans need in earthquake affected areas? These locals are stood on top of what was once a shop in Catia la mar. They’re looking for the owner who was in it at the time - others are believed to be there too. They have no helmets, gloves, mask, machinery etc. I asked them what they need. They said food, water, spades, helmets, tools and medicines. The second video shows them rushing off to catch packets of bread thrown from a truck. There are huge quantities of donations from people around the country - and abroad. But very little seems to be arriving to those who really need it. The third just about shows the people in that hole searching for the shop owner and others. Some you can’t even see. It’s not safe but they’re risking their lives because if they don’t try to find survivors - or bodies - who will?
