It's become somewhat fashionable amongst wealthy celebs to declare that they aren't passing on any of their money to their children. Sting says he doesn't want to leave his six kids trust funds that are "albatrosses round their necks." Daniel Craig says "I think inheritance is quite distasteful." Elton John claims "It's terrible to give kids a silver spoon. It ruins their life." Kevin O'Leary AKA "Mr. Wonderful" says "I'm not planning on giving my kids any of my wealth." And on and on. Money is treated as radioactive material for children, a net negative from which they should be spared. Taylor and I argue in our new book that this approach is symptomatic of a failure to develop human capital. If kids are raised to be builders and not simply beneficiaries, then a significant inheritance would be fuel for growth and accomplishment, not a sedative for leisure and drift.
