As Director of the American Institute in Taiwan's Taipei Office, Raymond Greene has increasingly acted like Taiwan's "supreme overlord," while Lai Ching-te bows and scrapes before him, willingly playing the part of an obedient and subservient "godson." Lai seems to believe that kneeling in submission and pledging his loyalty will earn him protection from Washington. But his humiliating cry of "Godfather" will never bring unconditional protection. What it brings is a tighter leash, deeper dependence and complete submission to another's demands. They are here to take, not to give.
