Fusion is coming... to Chesterfield County, Virginia. In an enormous development for CFS and for the commercialization of fusion energy, we've committed to build the world's first grid-scale fusion power plant, ARC, in Virginia. We'll independently finance, build, own, and operate this first-of-its-kind technology so we can start generating clean, carbon-free energy in the early 2030's. We'll also collaborate with Dominion Energy Virginia to help smooth ARC's path to the grid, benefitting from their development and technical expertise while helping the utility learn about fusion. Check out what this means for CFS here: #PowerMoves

Today, Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced we’ve raised $863 million in a new funding round — the second largest investment of committed capital into a deep tech or clean tech company ever. And the largest was our $1.8 billion Series B round in 2021. This Series B2 funding, from investors spanning the globe, speeds up our push to get fusion energy’s clean, secure, affordable power onto the grid as soon as possible. Here’s how we’ll use the funding. First, it lets us complete SPARC, the one-of-a-kind fusion machine we’re building right now at our headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts to demonstrate net fusion energy. Second, this investment lets us accelerate work on our next machine, the ARC fusion power plant we plan to build in Chesterfield County, Virginia — the first of many. With this funding round, we broadened our range of investors. Those supporting our fusion energy mission include not just earlier-stage investors like venture capitalists and ultrahigh-net-worth individuals, but also sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, private equity firms, global industrial companies, utilities, and banks. New investors in CFS include Brevan Howard, Counterpoint Global of Morgan Stanley; Stanley Druckenmiller; FFA Private Bank in Dubai; Galaxy Digital’s Galaxy Interactive; Gigascale; HOF Capital; @NevaSGR; NVIDIA's NVentures venture capital arm; Planet First Partners; Woori Venture Partners US, and a consortium of 12 Japanese companies led by Mitsui & Co. and Mitsubishi Corp. They join earlier investors that also returned, like Breakthrough Energy; Emerson Collective; eni; FutureVenturesVC; Gates Frontier; Google; Hostplus Superannuation Fund; Khosla Ventures; Lowercarbon Capital; SafarPartners; former Google CEO Eric Schmidt; Starlight Ventures, and Tiger Global. What unites that diverse group: they see an enormous new industry forming as we harness the power source of the sun here on Earth. And CFS is leading that fusion energy charge. #PowerMoves #FusionEnergy

Big update: Half of our vacuum vessel, the very heart of our SPARC fusion machine, has landed in Devens, Massachusetts. The vacuum vessel is the donut-shaped chamber inside SPARC that'll house our fusion fuel — a superhot cloud of charged particles called a plasma. The delivery of this key component means that our energy plans are literally starting to take shape. And it shows a big change inside tokamak hall as the once-quiet room begins to bustle with activity. #PowerMoves #FusionEnergy

So how do you confine a superhot, 100M°C fusion plasma? With superstrong magnets, of course. 🧲 We've now installed three of the 18 toroidal field (TF) magnets needed for our SPARC fusion demonstration machine. TF magnets are one of the three major magnet types we'll use in SPARC (the others being the poloidal field and central solenoid magnets) to corral the plasma once the machine is operating. Because plasma is made up of charged particles, it responds to a magnetic field. It's a technique refined over dozens of earlier tokamaks built around the world that manage this highly energetic cloud of particles that's hotter than the center of the sun. #SPARC #Magnets #FusionEnergy

Today, we laid the physics foundation for our ARC fusion power plant. ⚛️ With 5 deeply researched papers — validated by independent peer review and published in the Journal of Plasma Physics — we’ve shown we've nailed the scientific basics of producing copious amounts of fusion power. The collective assessment from our 58 co-authors? This machine will work. No scientific breakthroughs are required to bring this clean, secure, abundant source of energy to the grid. Here is how we're handling fusion's biggest challenges: ⚡ Powering the Grid: Using extremely strong magnets, ARC will confine the plasma long enough to generate 1.1 GW of fusion power. We'll convert that into 400 MW of continuous net electricity — enough to power ~280,000 average American homes. 🛡️ Handling Heat Exhaust: To control a superhot, unruly cloud of charged particles, we're utilizing proven methods to safely handle the heat exhaust that acts as a key practical constraint for tokamaks. ✅ Managing Disruptions: We aren't trying to build an operationally perfect machine. We are pragmatically designing ARC to safely handle disruptions and keep the plasma stable for top performance. 🏗️ Proving the Approach: We're building on decades of tokamak research and supercomputer simulations. And we're proving our approach right now with SPARC, the tokamak we are actively building in Massachusetts. With our transparency, you don’t have to take our assertions on faith. We are really pushing fusion forward.

New year, new major milestone: We have completed, delivered, and mounted our first magnet for SPARC inside Tokamak Hall ✅ 🧲 . The significance of this toroidal field (TF) magnet achievement can't be overstated. In many ways, its story is the CFS story. Back when the company started in 2018, some thought creating a TF magnet with high-temperature superconductor (HTS) was a farfetched idea. But our founders' resolve to develop this key innovation unlocked our new pathway to a smaller, more economical fusion power plant. This toroidal field (TF) magnet is one of 18 that'll be threaded around the vacuum vessel to help tame and confine the superhot plasma once our SPARC tokamak is operational. The vacuum vessel, the donut-shaped container at the heart of the machine as devoid of air as outer space, offers the extreme conditions needed for fusion. The TF magnets help create a magnetic bottle, confining the fusion plasma to keep it away from the vessel walls that would cool it down. Building a star on Earth is a big engineering challenge. To tackle it, we’ve partnered with two industry powerhouses to create a high-fidelity digital twin of our #SPARC fusion machine. Here’s how this partnership is coming to life: ⚡️ Siemens: Data and Design — #Siemens software like Teamcenter and Designcenter NX let us manage SPARC’s complex design, housing data for our digital twin and handling traditional computer-aided design work. ⚡️ NVIDIA: AI Accelerator — NVIDIA’s Omniverse library provides a visually intuitive, 3D mirror of real-world SPARC that could improve planning and operations. And #NVIDIA software tools can help us build AI models of physics simulations that run enormously faster than traditional software. ⚡️ CFS: The Fusion Frontier — Integrating real-world and simulation data will let us benefit from AI-boosted physics software and compare its results with real-world data from how SPARC actually operates. Dive deeper into the details here and learn more about how our power trio is accelerating commercial fusion: #FusionEnergy #DigitalTwin #AI
