The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff, with effect from June 30, 2026. Commissioned into the 2nd Lancers in December 1986, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth will become the Indian Army's 31st Chief of the Army Staff and the first Armoured Corps officer to be appointed Army Chief after almost 30 years. Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth has commanded some of the Army's most important operational formations, including the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, South Western Command and Southern Command. He has also been closely associated with force modernisation and capability development initiatives at Army Headquarters. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires from service on June 30. “Indian officers stay with their men..... One reason the Pakistan Army underperforms is because royalty has set into its officers. They think others are meant to work,” a Pakistani JCO from the Baluch Regiment once complained to Lt Gen Sanjay Kulkarni. "They had no officers, no supplies and no water," he recalls. This JCO had once fought in 1971 war and taken prisoner by the Indian Army. India often looks to Japan as a potential defence partner. But the reality is a little complicated. Speaking at the Rising Sun Conclave, Ambassador Sanjay Kumar Verma explained that Japan’s pacifist framework and strict export rules limit its ability to sell defence equipment but co-development may be a solution. Most Japanese defence manufacturers are large conglomerates where defence accounts for less than 10% of revenue. They have strong technology, but not the production capacity to meet India’s scale. Co-development could be the path forward but only if India builds an ecosystem that benefits both sides. Pakistan's Field Marshal Asim Munir was willing to sell Gwadar to the Chinese. “Pakistan was willing to transfer Balochistan’s Gwadar port, very critical strategic port, to China,” says Sandeep Unnithan, “It would allow China to militarise it, which means that it would allow Chinese warships and submarines to be based there,” he notes. When air defence is discussed, the assumption is often total protection. But that assumption does not hold, especially in India’s context.
