Okay watch but Pearl is definitely such a relatable character, especially as a low-income 2nd gen immigrant young woman. Growing up my parents taught me to be tough in hopes of preparing me for the ruthlessness of reality. Tough to them meant never being vulnerable, always working, and providing for the family no matter what. This is what it means to survive to them. From this, a young girl creates a skewed idea of what love is and the value of a human life when she’s never felt the tenderness of a simple “I love you” or hug saying everything will be alright. Every step is calculated til she achieves her goal but if all her actions she tries fails to give her that goal. The fall out of feeling success is a lottery ticket determined by birth right is a dangerous conclusion for a determined underprivileged soul. Pearl captures this idea and executes it well but it ran a bit short. I think a better build up in many parts would’ve really made the story sink into understanding Pearl more.
