In September 2020, Paris Hilton launched a petition to shut down Provo Canyon School, a youth residential treatment center in Utah where she says she endured abuse as a teenager. Now, the school is closing for good. Hilton spent the last six years turning her allegations of abuse at Provo Canyon into a broader reform movement. From Utah’s Capitol to Congress, she helped push for stronger oversight of youth treatment programs, especially in Utah. On Friday, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services determined that both the boys’ and girls’ campuses were not safe for the children in their care, marking the end of a years-long push for accountability from Hilton and fellow survivors. The K-pop group Riize has been at the center of controversy after it announced the return of one of its original members, Seunghan, then backtracked after receiving criticism. Seunghan had been on an indefinite hiatus since last year after videos of him smoking a cigarette and kissing a woman were leaked. Decarlos Brown Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder and, according to CNN, has prior convictions and a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia. In January, Brown was charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor and released by Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes on a written promise to appear at his next hearing. In 2014, Uldouz Wallace was subjected to image-based abuse when intimate photos — secretly taken by an ex-boyfriend without her consent — were leaked and distributed on adult sites against her will after she was hacked. The violation cost her work opportunities, strained relationships with friends and family, and damaged her reputation. Determined to fight back, she has since dedicated herself to passing the Protect Act, a law designed to block non consensual content from being uploaded to adult sites through consent verification. Hundreds are signing a petition calling for the dismissal of a Sturgeon, Missouri, police officer who shot and killed Teddy, a blind, 13-pound dog. According to a Facebook post by the Sturgeon Police Department, the officer thought the dog, who didn’t have a collar or tags, was “behaving strangely” and displaying signs of “rabid behavior.” The officer, per the statement, “felt that his only option was to put the animal down.” He later learned that his behavior was due to blindness.
