Fable made this film without generating a single image. All of it, music included, is code. Magnitude: 51 seconds from a hydrogen atom to the edge of the observable universe and back. Every frame is drawn by code. No footage, no image generation. How it's made: Javascript and Canvas 2D, nothing else. 38 rings, each ten times bigger than the last, 10⁻¹⁰ m to 10²⁷ m. Each world is a tonal painting turned into about 100,000 engraved hatch marks, rendered straight to video. The fixed point is Omo Kibish, Ethiopia, where the oldest well-dated Homo sapiens fossils in East Africa were found. The film starts and ends under an acacia there. The music is an original piano piece, also written in code, played through a sampled Steinway from Apple's GarageBand/Logic sound library. The tune never lands on its home note until the galaxy. The piano shrinks and grows with the picture: small at the atom, far away in deep space, back to normal under the tree. Easter eggs, if you pause: - the hydrogen atom as first imaged in 2013 - Earthrise, at the distance of the Moon - Halley's comet on its true orbit - Voyager 1, just past the edge of the sun's reach - the M87 black hole - Lord Rosse's Whirlpool, the first spiral galaxy ever drawn (1845) - the cosmic web, drawn to rhyme with the veins of the leaf it's all inside - the afterglow of the Big Bang, around the rim of the last ring - and under the tree: the Laetoli footprints, one large trail and one small.
