After Saint Anthony died on 13 June 1231, his body was buried at the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua. When his tomb was opened in 1981, an official scientific examination of his remains was undertaken on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of his death. The examination found that the skeleton was largely complete, although some parts were missing because relics had been removed and distributed for veneration over the centuries.Scientists examined the bones to determine details about Anthony's physical characteristics and health. The studies indicated that he was approximately 5 feet 5 inches (about 167 cm) tall and that his skeleton belonged to a man who had suffered various physical stresses during his lifetime. One particularly important discovery was that Saint Anthony's lower jaw was preserved, along with other major skeletal remains. His tongue and larynx are preserved separately among the Basilica's most famous relics.Most of Saint Anthony's skeletal remains are preserved in the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, while particular relics-including his incorrupt tongue, vocal apparatus and jaw-are displayed separately in the Basilica's Reliquary Chapel. The scientific examinations are important historically because they allow researchers to study the actual physical remains of a medieval saint while the Catholic Church continues to preserve and venerate them as sacred relics. Did you know that Padre Pio celebrated his final Mass on September 22, 1968, at 5:00 a.m? It took place in the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. Frail and physically exhausted, he was on the altar for the last time just hours before his death. Padre Pio initially intended to celebrate a "Low Mass" due to his severe fatigue. However, seeing the massiv crowd of pilgrims, he decided to celebrate a full Solemn Mass despite his failing health. Later that night, he renewed his religious vows and received the last rites. He passed away peacefully at 2:30 a.m. on September 23, 1968, with his final words being "Jesus, Mary". ~POWERFUL HEALING PRAYER ATTRIBUTED TO ST.PADRE PIO Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me. Elisha’s bones performed a miracle: a dead man was thrown into Elisha’s tomb, and when his body touched the prophet’s bones, he came back to life. As 2 Kings 13:21 records: “When the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.” Joseph’s bones were carefully preserved and carried for generations. In the middle of a world lockdown, with Italy at the peak of the first wave, the Pope chose to pray in front of a completely empty square. The pouring rain and the blue light of the twilight created an almost cinematic and deeply melancholy image, symbol of loneliness and fear that the whole world was living. The image of the Pope, limping and drenched in the rain, walking alone to the sanctum of a deserted basilica, has become the very icon of 2020.
