She didn’t know it at the time, but this ended up being Dana’s last line in Zoey 101. She didn’t have a line until eight minutes into the last episode. Her role had clearly severely diminished. Why did Kristin Herrera exit the show? I break it down here:

Wild, but true. When the actors playing Craig & Eric first met on the set of “Pool Shark” in January 2004, Craig was 13 years old, & Eric was 27. More than double his age! Scott Halberstadt, the actor playing Eric, turns 50 later this year. That almost doesn’t seem real.

After “All I Want Is Everything” finishes, Jade & Andre bolt off stage. This wasn’t scripted. Liz & Leon were under 18 at the time & needed to be released from set due to child labor laws. Taking a look at the script, Robbie was given Jade’s line. Trina was given Andre’s.

This is the first really interesting change to start the episode. Sikowitz’s scripted line is: “It’s all right, Jade. I don’t envy the man that marries you.” The delivered line was: “It’s all right, Jade. I savor your bitterness like a sweet, rancid cream sauce.” I laughed out loud when I read how different the line change was. Eric Lange was given a completely different line, and his delivery was so damn good. 😂 I’ve studied the girls’ reactions enough that I could absolutely see a world where Victoria’s face is telling me she had no idea that line was coming. I actually think that happened pretty often. The showrunner would tell one actor about a line change, but not necessarily the rest of the cast, specifically to get a genuine reaction out of them. And honestly, I think that’s exactly what happened here!

“Driving Tori Crazy” was inspired by a running joke in the Victorious writers’ room that some of the cast members from Victorious (and iCarly) refused to get their driver’s licenses. The episode was a playful nod to that joke. It became a Victorious episode rather than an iCarly episode because Schneider had already made a driver’s license storyline for Drake & Josh and didn’t want to repeat the same concept too many times.

And here’s Austin Butler’s first appearance on Zoey 101 — playing Danifer, a guy dating Stacey Dillsen. But before that, he was just a kid waiting in line to ride The Demonator with Drake, Josh, & Megan! Like Ned’s Declassified, he was an extra on D&J & had no lines.

Sean Flynn & Jack Salvatore talking about filming season 3 & 4 of Zoey 101 on a business campus in Santa Clarita, near Six Flags. I visited in September. It’s a hike of a drive, but incredibly scenic. An escape from Hollywood. So quiet. The nature is stunning.

If actor Michael Miranda had nailed this Drake & Josh scene during run through, we might never have gotten Jerry Trainor as Crazy Steve—and later, Spencer. Michael was originally cast as Crazy Steve, but after he ended up being the wrong fit for the role, Jerry stepped in at the 11th hour, and the rest is history. What still blows my mind is that years later, Michael and Jerry ended up sharing a scene together on Wendell & Vinnie.

This Drake & Josh blooper only aired on TV once — back in 2020 when Nickelodeon dug up some gems we’ve never seen before. In this clip from Josh Is Done, Mr Roland goes to lower the window shade & it malfunctions. Josh improvising “You should get that fixed!” kills me 😂

I’m mad the world got robbed of this Mrs. Benson line. It was cut from the episode. From the shooting script for iSam’s Mom: “Boys who eat badly have lives that are sadly. Boys who eat mushrooms don’t make mommy furious!”

Behind the scenes of iParty with Victorious — Sinjin’s fall into the hot tub. This stunt double fell 11 feet into a very tight space. It was a one take deal! Liz says there was some worry amongst the actors that he was gonna land on them.

To this day, I’m grateful Yvette Nicole Brown’s ABC sitcom with Kevin Hart was cancelled after six episodes, because I’m not sure I could’ve gotten on board with this Helen.

Many people don’t realize Sean Flynn, Chase from Zoey 101, left the show to pursue school. This paved the way for Austin Butler’s season four arc. This interview is super interesting. Sean says he regrets the decision & was expelled from school that same year.

Can confirm there were discussions among Nickelodeon execs around 2007 on if they could sue Sean for breaching his contract. He also stated that his agent dropped him because of this. This was never happening. A kids network suing one of their stars would have been CRAZY.

The best part of all was Emma going on Leno & him downplaying iCarly as a tween show. She shot him right down and called it “the best show of all time.” She had met the iCarly cast & creator at an SNL afterparty. 10 days later, she was guest starring as herself, basically.

After Victorious was cancelled, the Grub Truck was given to one of Nickelodeon’s vehicle vendors at wrap of the show. It had become a popular rental throughout LA. In 2016 the show was nearly rebooted. A crew member told me a bigger issue was going to be restoring this truck.

We know that The Plain White T’s performed “Our Time Now” at the end of their appearance on iCarly, but thanks to this video, it’s clear they also filmed “Hey There Delilah,” giving the show another option for the performance. I think it’s pretty clear that they did not know what route they wanted to go while filming, so they performed both. Let me explain:

Drake & Josh Go Hollywood feels like a masterpiece for many reasons. But if you need reason to like it even more, they used $30,000 in real $1 bills for the warehouse stunt scene at the end of the movie. Both the stunt coordinator & line producer confirmed this. Insane.

Roll the clip… I love how Jerry nearly takes out Jennette on this take. And then…he doesn’t even make it out of the door cleanly. Makes me wonder if “Can you get the door?” was scripted or not 😂

Found this audio clip from 2011 in which Dan Schneider discusses deliberately avoiding writing parents into his shows. “I don’t bring adults onto the show and have them be a drag. “My shows are about kids, and they’re about kids winning and about kids taking power over their lives and doing cool, fun things.”

Jerry Trainor recalls the final iCarly screen test for the role Spencer, which came down to him & one other guy. It was the last main role to be cast, just a week before shooting began. As he, Miranda, & the other actor were all leaving, Jerry was told to return back inside. The other actor turned to Miranda & her mom & said “Well, I guess I didn’t get it.” Sure enough, Jerry booked the role. The rest is history.

I have over 30 minutes of uncut behind the scenes footage from the Blues Brothers episode of Drake & Josh. Here’s a snippet of it. I think it would blow people’s minds what exists in the archive of these shows. So much was shot & kept.

The Victorious actors were always taught the philosophy of ‘stay in the play’ because you never know what could happen out of it. In this clip from Ice Cream for Ke$ha, the ice cream would not come out of the tub. Instead of breaking character, Victoria, Liz, & Leon kept it going until the director called cut. When it was over, the crew applauded the determination of them to keep it going. One of the producers said it was going on TV. And it made the end credits. Here’s Mike Caron, the assistant director on the episode, talking about that very moment.

That reminds me of the ending of the Tree House episode. On the first take, the tree house only fell partway and got stuck in an awkward position. Resetting it would’ve taken about an hour, so the crew called “hold” and locked the cameras in place. For take two, they simply pushed the tree house the rest of the way down. Since the cameras never moved, the two takes were stitched together in post, making it look like one seamless collapse. To this day, most viewers have no idea the beginning of the shot went awry. Movie magic!

In the original draft of ‘The Affair’ episode, Josh calls this woman a hussy. Nickelodeon asked that it be changed. Dan argued it was said on I Love Lucy in the 50’s, when you couldn’t even say the word pregnant on TV. So hussy was changed to skunk bag…which sounds worse 😂

I’ve always enjoyed this quote from Alec Medlock, who played Craig, one of the nerds on the show. One of his fondest memories from Drake & Josh was during the run-through for Really Big Shrimp, where Jerry Trainor enters & something goes wrong with the prop bra he’s holding. He thinks it wasn’t caught on tape because it was during run-through. I feel like he’s wrong. Dan had a crew member tape just about every run-through of all his shows. This is a clip I’d love to see.
