I delivered my last child in France, and during my antenatal visits, I noticed something interesting: most pregnant women came with their husbands or partners. I was usually alone. Even when I gave birth, the hospital initially recorded me as the sole parent because they had never seen my husband at any of my antenatal visits or during delivery. They explained that they could only acknowledge the parent they had seen and dealt with at the hospital. But here in Nigeria, you hardly see a pregnant woman going for antenatal with her husband. The husband is usually not available. So I'm wondering: is this mainly cultural, or is it because life in Nigeria is so demanding that many men simply don't have the time to accompany their wives to every hospital appointment?
