But The Red Pill you will have heard of as the mens rights documentary, because 10 years ago we screened the premiere in Melbourne together against all odds. What I thought was just a documentary we barely planned to be a tiny gathering of 30 people... exploded into a global media firestorm. CBS, NY and LA Times, Vice, and all the London papers. The petition for the venue to cancel succeeded claiming the film was 'refused classification', and the next 55 venues I contacted all declined. Cinema Nova: "Thank you for your query, but upon due consideration research we do not wish to court controversy which may be associated with the film." Schonell Theatre: "we are now unable to take any bookings this year or into next." Scots Church: "We'd need to go through the proper channels to... even consider this and... and... ... Yeah look I'm sorry there's just no way… " RMIT: Would "require an academic sponsor" for something "of this... nature"" It's hard to explain what different world 2016 was to those today, where even against such a mild topic David faced these enormous burdens without support behind him. David's memorial service is in Melbourne tomorrow, if you'd like to attend do DM.
