I last visited the grand city of Santo Domingo 43 years ago at the age of 19. It was emotional to retrace some of my steps from that memorable visit and reconnect with the vibrant history and culture of the Dominican Republic. ¡Que viva la histórica amistad entre nuestros pueblos hermanos! 🇺🇸🤝🇩🇴

Proud dad here! Our daughter Julia was just accepted by Duke University, her first choice college, where she plans to study engineering. She worked so hard in high school for this moment, and it’s thrilling to see her achieve her dream. Here she is at 7 pm tonight checking the website for the admissions decision. Congratulations and love to Julia Landau!

Our daughter Julia and some girlfriends are visiting San Francisco, California, for the first time, and her initial reaction is: “I love how many tech people are here. I can immediately recognize.” As if to prove the point, the girls took a ride in a Waymo (driverless taxi)—a Jaguar no less—which still seems like magic to me. Nice to have a sense of wonder in a world where we’ve become so jaded to technological advances.

Among my favorite times of the year is cherry season in late June/early July. For a few glorious weeks every year, cherries are plentiful, inexpensive, and delicious. Caroline even bought a little plastic contraption to remove the pits. I didn’t grow up with cherries, so for me they’re still a delicacy. 🍒

You had to know that President Donald J. Trump Donald J. Trump was going to pull out all the stops for the fireworks show last night on the Mall, and it was glorious. Caroline, Julia, and I were honored to join Secretary Marco Rubio at a reception for the foreign diplomatic corps at the Department of State, where we had an amazing view overlooking the Lincoln Memorial. Happy birthday USA! 🇺🇸

No trip to La Paz, Bolivia 🇧🇴 is complete without a visit to the Witches’ Market downtown, where indigenous women sell herbal remedies, amulets, and good luck charms — including animal fetuses! Was very moved that a group of young participants in an Embassy-sponsored English language program put on a show for our delegation.

Few things make me happier when traveling than trying local street foods. Although I didn’t have time to hit the actual streets during my recent visit to Cairo, I found an amazing variety of local dishes at a restaurant in the new Grand Egyptian Museum. From fresh baked breads to mezze to lamb to fresh sugar cane juice, I’m a big fan of this traditional cuisine! 🇺🇸🤝🇪🇬

The hospitality culture in Central Asia is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. In Uzbekistan 🇺🇿, where I am now, they treat every guest as a dear and honored friend, and every meal as a feast. Tables are laden with a variety of nuts, fruits, meats, and cheeses, and then they bring out at least 6-7 courses—soup, salad, meat pastries (“samsa”), chicken, fish, lamb, beef, the national dish “plov” (a sort of rice pilaf), and dessert. I would be morbidly obese if I lived here. “Oldik” 🥂to my new friends in Uzbekistan!
