The United States is not a fascist country yet. But the process to become one is unfolding rapidly. The primary reason for this is the capitulation of the Democratic Party to the corporate donor class. The liberal class — intent on crushing any attempts to subvert the agenda of its oligarchic masters — has ushered in this new dark age.

John Mearsheimer explains the leverage that Iran holds in regards to the global oil markets. If Trump ups the ante this week and goes after Iranian civilian infrastructure, he says, the Iranians can shut down all the ports that are currently allowing 7 million barrels of oil to still pass through the Gulf today — inflicting complete devastation on the U.S. and the world economy.

Beyond revealing the depravity of the ruling class, the genocide in Gaza has unveiled the true inner workings of the global financial order — as regular people continue to struggle, war concentrates wealth into the hands of the transnational oligarchs running the world, providing them pretexts to develop technology that increases their capacity to control disobedient populations and secure their own class interests. Watch my full interview with Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur oPt at the link below.

An audience member at a Q&A recently asked me why I'm so apocalyptic. The genocide in Gaza, beyond being a tragedy, marks an irreversible shift in the global world order. Before the genocide, the imperialist ambitions of the Western oligarchic class were partially constrained by the utopian ideal of the rules-based order. Now that ideal is gone, and unrestrained barbarity will characterize the methodology of the war-making ruling class. In other words — our future is an apocalyptic one.

On Al Jazeera, I was recently asked if the reason that dissident movements like the Civil Rights movement and abolitionist groups have existed and succeeded in the U.S. was because of the institutions developed by the founding fathers. The answer is no — movements, not our slaveholding oligarchic founding fathers, have been the primary driving force of the progressive change enacted in America since its founding. While the institutions developed under our bourgeois democracy have provided a level of lateral space for dissent to be pushed through, it is the grassroots campaigns that have worked against the system that have reformed it for the better — not the elites who created and rule it.

One of the main problems Americans face as the Empire declines is that we are ruled by grifters and idiots. When the British Empire fell, it slowly disengaged with its more imperialist impulses. The American Empire, on the other hand, has both of its political parties ramping up the nation's militarism, and as a result is inflicting massive suffering on the global populace as it falls.

With little hope of the genocide in Gaza subsiding, dock workers in major Italian port cities have organized strikes and large demonstrations to halt arms shipments to Israel. These actions are a direct response to the refusal of international institutions and governments around the world to confront the carnage. Though the genocide continues, the dockworkers’ industrial disruption offer us a model of resistance. Will the Italian way spread to the imperial core — and can it end the genocide? Our documentary, Resistance 101: Forging a New Movement for Palestine In Italy, premieres on The Chris Hedges YouTube channel tomorrow morning. We will have a Livestream Q&A to discuss the film and its subject matter at 3pm ET.

In my recent conversation with Hüseyin Dogru, he broke down the institutional pressures on journalists and media outlets to spin the genocide in Gaza in a manner favorable to Israel. The potential for punishment — such as the German government's sanctioning and de-banking of him — has imposed an omnipresent possibility of severe punishment, cultivating a culture of paranoid self-censorship in the media.

I recently went on Al Jazeera English to discuss the state of America this 4th of July. The reality is that we are on a track towards despotic rule — not all of our democratic systems have crumbled entirely, but none ever do immediately. The shift to authoritarianism is a process that unfolds, and here in the United States, the structures holding in place our democratic systems have been being rolled back for a long time. With Trump, that roll back has only been accelerated.

Iran's military response to the US and Israel cannot be viewed in a vacuum — its decision to attack Tel Aviv and American military bases in the region was preceded by Israel's egregious war crime of killing negotiators working on behalf of Iran twice as well as the initial launching of hostilities by the Trump administration and Israel. Trump believed he could replicate the Venezuela outcome in Iran. The reality, however, is that Iran holds all the cards in these talks, and it will not give them up.

A commenter recently asked me why the political class is so willing to let everything be destroyed, when all they'd be ruling over are the ashes of the Empire. For them, however, it's not the ashes. As courtiers of the ruling class, they are protected members of society that not only get saved from the destruction, but profit from it as well.
