An audience member at a Q&A recently asked me why I'm so apocalyptic. The genocide in Gaza, beyond being a tragedy, marks an irreversible shift in the global world order. Before the genocide, the imperialist ambitions of the Western oligarchic class were partially constrained by the utopian ideal of the rules-based order. Now that ideal is gone, and unrestrained barbarity will characterize the methodology of the war-making ruling class. In other words — our future is an apocalyptic one.

One of the main problems Americans face as the Empire declines is that we are ruled by grifters and idiots. When the British Empire fell, it slowly disengaged with its more imperialist impulses. The American Empire, on the other hand, has both of its political parties ramping up the nation's militarism, and as a result is inflicting massive suffering on the global populace as it falls.

With little hope of the genocide in Gaza subsiding, dock workers in major Italian port cities have organized strikes and large demonstrations to halt arms shipments to Israel. These actions are a direct response to the refusal of international institutions and governments around the world to confront the carnage. Though the genocide continues, the dockworkers’ industrial disruption offer us a model of resistance. Will the Italian way spread to the imperial core — and can it end the genocide? Our documentary, Resistance 101: Forging a New Movement for Palestine In Italy, premieres on The Chris Hedges YouTube channel tomorrow morning. We will have a Livestream Q&A to discuss the film and its subject matter at 3pm ET.

A commenter recently asked me how we build a new left in the face of increasing fascist repression within the U.S. and abroad. I answered that this new movement, were it to form, would need to be characterized by two guiding principles — anti-capitalism and and anti-imperialism.

.Norman Finkelstein has recently taken issue with the characterization by figures like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens of the Trump-Israeli relationship primarily being driven by "blackmail." On my last Q&A, I briefly broke down the complexities of how Israel exerts influence on the American political system, primarily via legalized bribery (but still including blackmail).

Trump is a cult leader — one that will not be easily replaced. But that doesn't mean that the GOP will lose power once he is gone. There is the very real consideration that, in order to cling to the power Trump cultivated for them, we will see a much more nakedly fascist system take his place.

A commenter recently asked me why the political class is so willing to let everything be destroyed, when all they'd be ruling over are the ashes of the Empire. For them, however, it's not the ashes. As courtiers of the ruling class, they are protected members of society that not only get saved from the destruction, but profit from it as well.

The unilateral style of Trump's foreign policy — the way in which his administration wages war and interventionist campaigns without congressional approval, or even a manufactured pretext — is enabled by the groundwork that was laid by neocons during the War on Terror, says Matt Kennard.

The real death count in Gaza is likely extraordinarily higher than the official figures. People trapped under the rubble aren't counted — only those that died in hospitals, which are now practically nonexistent. Anecdotally, my friends have disappeared. People I've had contact with have stopped replying.

.Seth Harp details the role that CIA asset and U.S. Special Forces soldier, Ali Mohamed, played in training Al Qaeda in tactics eerily similar to the 9/11 attacks. While the canonical accounts of 9/11 acknowledge the role that the 1980s U.S.-backing of the Mujahideen played in leading to the attacks, they never account for this close relationship between an active U.S. Special Forces soldier and the top brass of Al Qaeda.
