Ukrainian long-range attack drones have struck a logistics center near Moscow belonging to Wildberries — an online retailer and e-commerce marketplace similar to Amazon. A senior Ukrainian official tells me this attack was retaliation for the Russian strikes on the facilities of Nova Poshta, Ukraine’s private postal service.

Ukrainian SBU security service sources tell Financial Times the agency is conducting "a large-scale special operation to destroy enemy bomber aircraft" deep inside Russia. "SBU drones are targeting aircraft that bomb Ukrainian cities every night. At this point, more than 40 aircraft have reportedly been hit." Video footage filmed by a Ukrainian reconnaissance aircraft and shared by the official appeared to show Russia’s Belaya airfield, located in south-eastern Siberia some 5,500km east of the frontline, in flames.

Russia targeted Kyiv with ballistic missiles overnight. At least 14 people were killed and 27 more were injured, said the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Its units are working at four locations to extinguish fires. Numerous warehouses and logistics facilities were hit, authorities said.

Good morning from Kyiv. Thousands of Ukrainians are turning out for another rare wartime public protest — a year after the last one — demanding that President Zelenskyy reappoint popular defense minister Mykahilo Fedorov. Ukraine’s parliament is scheduled to begin voting in a new government at 10:30am local time, beginning with a vote to appoint Sergii Koretskyi as the new prime minister. The rest of the cabinet, if things go to plan, should begin around 1:30pm local time.

Russian forces occupying the destroyed city of Bakhmut, eastern Ukraine, where I used to live posted a video this week. It shows the very city center in ruins. I passed this central square every day for two years between 2010-12 and lived just in the building on the right. The square was filled with roses. The city used to bustle with people. After one of the longest and bloodiest battles of Russia’s invasion, it can’t sustain life.

One of the more bizarre aspects of the Andriy Yermak corruption case saga spilled out in court yesterday and today. Zelenskyy's powerful former chief of staff had a "fortune teller" who he knew as "Veronika Feng Shui." Her name is Veronika Anikievich, a Kyiv resident, according to public records. According to her social media – much of which she appears to have now deleted – she was a big supporter of Yermak. According to Ukraine's Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's office, Yermak sought advice from Veronika about several cabinet officials, including many still in office. He also asked the fortune teller about anti-corruption officials, politicians and journalists who he did not like. She advises him to get rid of his enemies while he has the protection of the president, according to prosecutors reading aloud texts between the two in court.

Ukraine's SBU security service says its Sea Baby naval drones today struck another Russian “shadow fleet” tanker in the Black Sea. Video from an SBU source purports to show the oil tanker "Dashan" being hit by the attack drone and explosions in the stern area. "The vessel, flying the flag of the Comoros, was moving in the exclusive economic zone of Ukraine towards the Novorossiysk port terminal. It was moving at maximum speed with its transponder turned off." The SBU says the tanker "suffered critical damage." The attack was a joint operation with the Ukrainian Navy.

Russia’s air campaign has only ramped up in the past few weeks, with bombardments getting bigger and lasting longer than in previous months. Russia used to launch dozens or 100+ Iran-designed explosive and decoy drones at Ukraine during attacks, but now it’s launching 300+ and 400+ each time, as production capacity increases. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired 472 missiles and drones overnight. Russia’s military is also employing new tactics, flying its drones higher than much of Ukraine’s small air defenses can reach, stretching Kyiv’s more limited resources and forcing difficult decisions over which drones and missiles to try to shoot down. Then, once the drones reach their target area, many of them plunge downward at a steep angle that makes it difficult to shoot them down. They used to fly low and slow. Upgrades have allowed them to fly faster, at greater altitudes, and carry larger warheads.

Ukraine’s SBU security service behind the Spiderweb operation has claimed credit for the drone strikes on Russia’s Kupol plant in Izhevsk, which produces the Tor and Osa air defense systems, as well as drones for the army. “On the morning of July 1, long-range SBU drones struck the production facilities and warehouse of the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol, located in the Republic of Udmurtia,” an SBU official says. The distance to the target was over 1,300km from Ukraine.

Zelenskyy in his address tonight: “Currently, the oil market is in a fragile state due to the unresolved situation around Iran. Oil-producing countries, including Russia, may now earn more. Our drones and missiles are limiting Russia’s ability to do so.” “Everything Russia earns from elevated oil prices will be spent on this war. That is why every restriction on Russia’s ability to export oil is the right step. If Russia is ready to stop strikes on our energy infrastructure, we will be ready to respond in kind.”

I think the chances of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin before end of August is exactly zero. After that, extremely slim to none. A Putin-Zelensky summit is a fantasy of Trump’s. He appears to have misunderstood Putin or been misled by him. Lavrov said today, “Putin confirmed his readiness to continue direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations that took place in Istanbul.” And that Putin was prepared to “raise the level of delegations.” But that is not Putin saying he is ready to meet Zelensky.
