They lied with venomous glee—about the crimes that never happened, the phantom arsons, the fabricated desecrations of the War Memorial and the Terry Fox statue. They painted honest truckers as rapists and monsters, conjured ghosts of Russian puppeteers and shadowy foreign cash, then branded ordinary middle-class families as right-wing terrorists festering in their own country. They lied about the Emergencies Act, that final betrayal of democracy, and when the moment came to crush the dissent, the former Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister laughed like a delighted schoolgirl—twisting the knife with childish joy—as she announced the freezing of bank accounts, the cancellation of insurance policies, all without warrants, without judges, without Parliament, without mercy. Just the cold snap of authoritarian steel closing around the throats of those who dared speak. In the shadows of Ottawa, freedom died not with a roar, but to the sound of her giggling.
